13: The Musical is now available on Netflix and offers families a touching story based on the Broadway Musical “13”, but with a twist, which includes Debra Messing!
To learn more about this new character, I was able to interview Debra Messing and get the behind the scene details!
Note: I was invited as media for movie screening and cast interview. However any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.
Event covered by Savio P. Clemente, Board Certified wellness coach, author, syndicated columnist, podcaster who blogs at www.thehumanresolve.com
Debra shared her thoughts about playing a new character not in the original musical, acting with kids and how 13: The Musical highlights Jewish families.
Similarities with the Character
Debra Messing: First I'm also a divorced women, a single mom of one boy, from New York City who grew up in Rhode Island next to a farm, and was one of three Jewish kids in my whole community. So I saw myself in Evan.
I understood the experience of being an "other" at that age. Just desperately wanting to fit in and feeling like people just don't understand.
I think that the writing between the mother and son was really honest. I love the fact that it's through the boys eyes. So much of the time, these movies about high school, it's the girls who are struggling. So to have a boy, it just feels powerful to me.
Debra Messing: Also it was very meaningful to me to see my culture, to see a story about a Jewish family. I can't remember a movie where it's about a Jewish family. With all the antisemitic in the world getting worse, I think it's really important to show inclusion is the way.
They make sorta of weird guesses about what being a jew is, and it's funny, but by the end, they teach each other. And their changed, at the end, everyone is welcomed, everybody is dancing together. That really was the most important thing to me.
Being Evan's Mom for the Movie
Debra Messing: It was shocking to learn the character didn't exist in the Broadway play, and that was the point, they wanted to expand the lens. And the fact that there would be a new song.
I felt a lot of responsibility, because I knew they were changing this beloved musical, and often change can be not a great thing for big fans. So I wanted her (the mom) addition to add something to the movie, that made sense, without distracting from all the joy.
Debra Messing: I felt some freedom cause the character didn't exist. I was able to have some faith because Robert Horn, is such an amazing book writer. We had a 2 week locked in when in Toronto and he called and said, lets go through the movie and the lines to see if you have any thoughts.
I thought that was incredibly generous. We came up with new funny stuff and I like Jessica!
Interactions with Eli Golden
Debra Messing: Eli blew my mind. Just walking on that set and having that kind of responsibility, of carrying the whole movie. And to have to sing, dance, learn choreography, I thought any kid would be overwhelmed by this.
The very first day, we did our song, so to spend the while day, just the two of us, and to sing a song that intimate, really brought us together. And really set the stage for the whole rest of the movie.
The Take Away Message of 13: The Musical
Debra Messing: I hope kids can watch and recognize that they're not alone. That whatever struggles their going through or questions they have about themselves, it's the norm for this time in a kids development.
Also to learn how to be forgiving of yourself, cause everybody makes mistakes, including adults. To show that a mistake isn't a failure, it's a lesson. You can choose to be defeated by it or you can choose to be better. And to make a better choice next time.
13: The Musical is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
SYNOPSIS
Following his parents’ divorce, 12-year-old Evan Goldman (Eli Golden) uproots from New York City with his mother Jessica (Debra Messing). With his Bar Mitzvah fast approaching, Evan is devastated that he must leave all his friends, his father (Peter Hermann) and his rabbi (Josh Peck) behind.
But upon arriving at his grandmother’s (Rhea Perlman) house in small-town Walkerton, Indiana, he hatches a plan to win new friends by turning his Bar Mitzvah into the coolest party ever. As an outsider navigating the complicated social circles of his new school, Evan quickly finds out he’s not the only one grappling with the all too familiar anxieties of eighth grade.
While his new friends Patrice (Gabriella Uhl) and Archie (Jonathan Lengel) fret over the fate of the planet and unrequited love, respectively, popular cheerleader Lucy (Frankie McNellis) desperately plots to stave off a first kiss between her crush Brett (JD McCrary) and best friend Kendra (Lindsey Blackwell).
To make matters worse, Evan invites the popular kids to his party—who aren't fans of Patrice. With these competing interests in play, Evan faces the impossible task of bringing everyone happily together in time for his party, or else risk social ruin.
Suddenly, turning 13 isn’t looking as good as it’s cracked up to be.

Are black cats really bad luck? I recently had the chance to find out during an interview with Simon Pegg, who voices "Bob", the black cat in LUCK, coming exclusively on Apple TV+.
Note: I was invited as media for movie screening and film cast interview. However any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.
During my interview with Simon, we discussed what kind of "Luck" he would like to have, along with similarities to "Bob" the cat and the message of the film.
What Type of Luck Would You Want
Simon Pegg: I suppose it comes down to whether it's a material moment, like winning a bunch of money. I think your lucky in life if you experience genuine love. Whether it's love that your feeling or receiving.
I think that's the most important one, beyond any type of material gain.
Simon Pegg: Or the idea of just being happy. I always think that success should be measured by whether or not we're happy, rather then how much we have or manage to accumulate.
If you're happy, then your successful. If you feel that way, then I think your lucky. It will always be something non material, although the temptation is to say a Ferrari.
What Excited Him About Luck Film
Simon Pegg: I just love the concept of the worlds of good and bad luck. And how extraordinarily complex and beautiful they were, and yet really the whole thing was like an office job.
They were all just punching a clock and working (for them) in a mundane place. Which I thought was quite funny, considering how visual it is.
But also the chance to play Bob, I loved getting to do a Scottish accent. It was lovely idea.
Similarities to Bob
Simon Pegg: I'm a bit grumpy sometimes. I do get that loner-ness that Bob has a little sometimes. He just wants to be by himself. And he learns that probably not the right thing to do.
I can feel like that sometimes, but I also know the value of having friends and that kind of support network is very important.
Definitely his kinda of mischievous side. That is very much me. Slight impatience. I'm more like Bob then I realize.
Does He Personally Believe in Luck
Simon Pegg: Kinda. I think Luck is something we create for ourselves. The idea that something else is in control of our lives and we don't have responsibility for our actions, cause it's sorta ordained by something else, I don't believe that.
I believe that Luck is what we make. So the opportunities come our way and we either convert them into good luck, or we let them go and that's kinda bad luck.
Simon Pegg: I feel like it's important for us to take responsibility for what we do, and not ascribe blame elsewhere. At the same time, it's a positive thing to suggest that you got to where you want to be, not through some mystical kind of force, but because you made the right choices, and did the right thing.
I think that's part of what this film teaches, in a really sweet way. The positivity that you put into the world can often come back at you, in the form of what feels like good luck. But at the end of the day, it was you that did it.
The Message of Luck
Simon Pegg: You make your own Luck by putting love into the world. The more you express, the more you get back. For a film about a magical world that creates luck, I think really at the end of the day, the characters make their luck.
They do so by being the best individuals they can be. And that's the best thing we can teach our kids. Is to be kind, is to put positivity into the world, to treat people as you want to be treated, and you'll find that when the good luck starts to come back to you.
LUCK is streaming August 5, exclusively on Apple TV+.

To celebrate the digital release of Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, I'm sharing 3 reasons why families will enjoy this animated story of an underdog who becomes top dog with the help of a cat!
By the end of the movie Hank and Jimbo have an amazing bond that helps make each of them better. But it sure didn't start that way. There was some real issues with bring Hank and Jimbo together. They both have problems being a "good" friend.
But it's enjoyable to watch how the friendship forms and how they learn to trust each other while fighting the "bad" guys.
Love-able Side Characters
While Hank might be the main character saving the day, the story is filled with so many characters you'll enjoy watching just as much as Hank.
From the adorable kitten Emiko who has so much heart and a samurai spirit to Ohga, who is the villains assistant but is hilarious and long suffering with his "bad" boss cat. So many fun personalities in the film.
The Off the Wall Humor
I have to be honest here, there's a few jokes and scenes that are more suited for older kids and adults. Like a farting scene. There was a whole scene about a farting army. And then there's a giant toilet. I wont even get into it.
But if you like this sort of wacky humor then it's a plus. Overall the film has some quirky but enjoyable funny moments throughout. Like the grandma cat who yells at everyone. We loved her.

Upcoming exhibit LAIKA: Life in Stop Motion will “take over” the animation section of the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) dynamic core exhibition Behind the Screen. It will include puppets, sets, and video clips from LAIKA’s first five films.
The new exhibit starts September 1, 2022, and will also feature 2-D LAIKA character figures and environments that visitors can use to create their own stop-motion animations at MoMI’s interactive stations, which the creator can share and post online.
LAIKA: Life in Stop Motion will be on view through August 27, 2023. It will be accompanied by screenings of LAIKA films in the Museum’s Redstone Theater.
Face masks (ages 2+) are required during screenings in the Museum’s theaters and recommended in other areas of the building.
MoMI has presented numerous exhibitions devoted to animation. In addition, the Museum’s core exhibition Behind the Screen, which explores the many crafts and creative processes behind moving images, has a section devoted to animation and its link to the birth of cinema.
Creators of the Oscar®-nominated animated films Missing Link (2019), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), The Boxtrolls (2014), ParaNorman (2012), and Coraline (2009), LAIKA is credited with reviving the venerable cinematic technique of stop-motion animation by marrying it to the most cutting-edge technological advances in the filmmaking sector.
All of LAIKA’s films have been nominated for Best Animated Film Oscars.
Kubo and the Two Strings was also nominated for the Visual Effects Academy Award, only the second time in history that an animated film was recognized in this way. Kubo won the BAFTA Award; Missing Link received the Golden Globe in 2019, and LAIKA was awarded a Scientific and Technology Oscar in 2016 for its innovation in the use of 3-D printers in animated filmmaking.

Have you ever wondered why some people get "good" luck, while others get "bad" luck? According to upcoming film "LUCK", releasing August 5th on Apple TV, there's an actual system why.
Note: I was invited as media for movie screening and film cast interview. However any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.
Sadly for the main character Sam Greenfield aka the unluckiest person in the world, this system is clearly working against her! Before screening "LUCK", I was a hoping that Sam would find a way to "beat the system" and get some "good" luck.
Then I saw the movie and got a different view point about the whole system and understood Sam, and "unlucky" people like her, might actually be lucky on the flip size.
But the change of view point isn't the only reason I think families will enjoy watching LUCK. The movie has a few more things to enjoy
Another View about "Being Lucky"
The movie really does a good job at showing how Sam deals with her unlucky moments. And how dealing with those moments actually helps Sam find some unexpected positives in her life and for her friends.
The Humor. Unicorns. Bunnies. Oh My!
The side characters have just as much charm and personality as the main characters. And it's all so funny. The way Sam discovers and interacts with them is a delight. Especially the dancing scene. Trust me.
The Animation and Storytelling
The land of Luck is truly a fantasy world. The colors, different areas and the animated actions scenes are so well done. You really feel like your watch a magical world where things are possible. It's a treat for the eyes and the imagination.
Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation, "LUCK" is a story about Sam Greenfield: the unluckiest person in the world, who suddenly finds herself in the never-before-seen Land of Luck.
