Why preeclampsia is so elusive—and deadly

Until now, there hasn’t been a good way to predict who will develop preeclampsia so providers and expectant parents have had to watch for symptoms and “wait and see.”

The challenge is, once symptoms develop, preeclampsia can get bad quickly, necessitating quick action to have the best outcome for the pregnant person and baby. Preeclampsia can lead to serious complications such as seizure, stroke, organ failure, hemorrhage, and even death.

Survivors also face a 4x increased risk of heart failure and a 2x increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and death because of cardiovascular disease across their lifetime.

• Preeclampsia affects 1 in 12 pregnancies in the United States and can lead to serious complications for the pregnant person and baby. It is characterized by high blood pressure that usually develops after the 20th week of pregnancy, but usually occurs after 27 weeks.
• Symptoms of preeclampsia include high blood pressure, persistent headache, vision changes, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
• Often striking without warning, the disease is also a leading cause of poor fetal growth and preterm birth, and can result in prolonged NICU and hospital stays.
• The only treatment for preeclampsia once it develops is delivery. Although we try to manage the symptoms and monitor closely, oftentimes symptoms worsen no matter what we do, and preterm delivery is required. We try our best to get pregnancies to 37 weeks when we identify preeclampsia, but many times this is not possible.

Preeclampsia can progress rapidly and often occurs in healthy pregnancies that were otherwise progressing normally.

How Encompass empowers women during their pregnancy journey

Encompass is a first-of-its-kind solution in pregnancy care to address the rising rates of pregnancy complications. For many mother's the postpartum experience is filled with care for the new baby. But it should also be filled with selfcare for the new mom and the body that has helped birth new life.

One way for moms to postpartum selfcare is by using the process of Belly Binding.

Belly binding is a technique of wrapping yourself with material to support your belly area and back. This helps your body while the muscles and organs recovers and re-adjusts. It also feels really good.

After I birthed my son, I did bind my belly for a few weeks but I didn't have any real guidance. I just wrapped fabric around and started my day.

I wish I had a product like Bellibind, which offers a real system for self wrapping, as well as access to a specialists (in person or virtual) for tips and support.

I received a packaged that included a Belli Besties kit, which included skin firming womb oil and 100% organic cotton fabric. They also gifted me a spritz facial mist, which was a nice plus.

Bellibind Tips for Self-Wrapping at Home

Princess McKinney-Kirk, the founder of Bellibind, an expert in Bengkung belly binding and a doula for over 11 years, also provided me with a few tips for my self wrapping experience.

• Tighter is not always Better! It's important to remember your body is seeking gentle support and fitting garments too tightly and creating too much pressure around a single section (like the mid-section) can make pelvic floor issues more pronounced. Even tension that feels snug like a hug is best and the most supportive postpartum.
• Ensure full Hip to Underbust Coverage. We are not just cinching your waist. Belly binding is intended to include the hips up to the underbust. This allows for better core and posture support.
• Be sure to have a support person available to help with baby as you take time to tend to your healing body with your self-binding practice. Alternatively, with no support available, time your self-wrapping after a good feeding with baby and a quick shower rinse off.
• Don't wrap too snug around the ribcage. The belly binding should not feel like a corset and when self-wrapping it's easy to go too tight in the rib area. Take deep breaths as you go over the ribs or finish your last few layers while sitting to ensure optimal comfort in that position.

Self Wrapping with Bellibind

So how did I do with the self wrapping?

After watching the video tutorial a few times, I was able to make a good start. Once you learn the process of working the material and getting into a wrap and knot grove, it goes quicker then expected.

The lineup wasn't as tight or gathered like it could be, but even with my minimal effort I could feel the supportive effect of the wrap. And it felt much better then my first belly wrapping experience.

Not bad for a first timer. I think with more practice, I'll get a better fit.

But in case I want help and support, Bellibind has various ways to get help from phone consultation, to someone coming for a in house visit or scheduling a virtual wrap session.

And as a mom, that's something I know other mothers would appreciate.

Pampers celebrated their 10 year anniversary with UNICEF, Emma Bunton (aka Baby Spice) helped launch UNICEF '1 Pack = 1 Vaccine' 10th Anniversary Campaign.

During the event, Emma shared why she partnered with Pampers and is a UNICEF ambassador to help the fight to eliminate maternal and newborn tetanus (MNT) around the world.

Emma Bunton, said:

"I feel honored to be supporting this campaign for a third year. Joining the people who have been instrumental in the success of this partnership at the very place it began ten years ago has been an unforgettable experience. Over the last 10 years this programme has helped save the lives of 500,000 newborns around the world; something I believe is an incredible achievement and something that parents in the UK should feel proud to have contributed to.

"However, the work isn't over - something I was reminded of when I visited Madagascar last year to see the impact that Pampers' funding has had on the lives of mums and babies who have benefitted from the maternal and newborn tetanus vaccination programme. Whilst great progress has been made, there are still babies in 21 countries around the world at risk from maternal and newborn tetanus.

The event also hosted an panel with Emma Bunton, Sirma Umer (VP of Baby Care, P&G) and Yoka Brandt (Deputy Exec Director External Affairs, UNICEF)

The panel shared that maternal and newborn tetanus affects families in some of the poorest areas of the world and it occurs when newborns are infected as a direct result of unhygienic birthing practices, such as cutting the umbilical cord with un-sterile instruments.

Once newborn tetanus has been contracted there is no real cure and it still claims the lives of 49,000 newborns every year[1], which is equivalent to one baby's life every 11 minutes[2].

Thanks to the support of parents, since the Pampers-UNICEF "1 pack = 1 vaccine" campaign began, an estimated 500,000 newborn babies have been saved[2] and a vaccine has reached a mother and her baby every second.

Since the Pampers UNICEF partnership began in 2006, Pampers funding has already helped to eliminate maternal and newborn tetanus in 17 countries.[3] However there are still 21[4] countries where the disease remains a threat.

Through the continuation of their simple "1 pack = 1 life-saving vaccine" campaign, Pampers® funding is supporting vaccination activities in 20[5] of these countries and UNICEF's work with the many partners involved in the elimination effort. This effort involves working with governments, and partnering with organizations working on the ground to expand access to this life saving vaccine

This week TheMoms and Pearl World, Inc hosted an event at Fred's at Barneys NY for the launch of Perfect Pearl, a line of skincare products for mother and baby that uses real pearl gemstones for their health benefits.

During the event, Ying Zhou, creator of Perfect Pearl, shared why she created the line.

I was invited to interview Jewel, singer-songwriter and new mom! Our interview was about her partnership with Pampers to celebrate the "Millions of Beautiful Morning Moments" shared between parents and their babies.

Of course I said YES! I was excited to learn more about Jewel's morning moments with her 1 year old son Kase, and why she partnered with Pampers.

While I interviewed her via phone, I was lucky to have our interview video tape so you lucky readers can see her live and in person...as she answered my questions

• ON MORNINGS: "I'm excited to partner with Pampers to celebrate beautiful mornings. The morning is my favorite time with my baby. I thought it was just me and Kase. I just thought, 'Wow, Kase is always in a great mood in the morning.' Then I talked to other moms and realized its every moms favorite time with their baby. It's something kind of magical - they are just in a good mood, they got a great nights sleep and its just fun to hang out with them."

• ON HER MOST BEAUTIFUL MORNING: "One of my favorite morning moments with Kase is getting to read with him. Its amazing to me how one day to the next he'll learning something new."

• ON SPECIAL MILESTONES WITH HER BABY: "There's the big ones. The first time he smiled. And the first time he was able to sing a note back to me back. It amazed me."

• ON PARENTING: "My best advice for parents trying to balance life and busy schedules is to try and cut yourselves some slack. As parents we hold ourselves to high standards and I think we're always worried and we feel guilty like we're not doing enough. All you can do is the best you can. As long as you love your kids and give them that stability, then they're pretty accommodating."

Forgive the lag between my questions and Jewels answers, I think there was a delay because of the time difference. Still, how cool to speak with her and learn more about Pampers "Beautiful Mornings Moments".
