When I first saw the Focus Features film TULLY, I was excited and grateful, because it offered a realistic view of the hardship of motherhood, along with the amazing moments.

Now that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has released TULLY on Digital, Movies Anywhere, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand, you can watch this touching story at home.

MY REVIEW

Like most mothers with a newborn baby Marlo (Charlize Theron) has a lot to juggle. Nights and days of the repeated routine of feeding, changing and comforting. Add to that the needs of her other two children, one who is on the spectrum and husband, who's sorta disconnected from her.

It's A LOT. But Marlo tries to handle it all with a smile. Til she can't. And that's where the movie takes an interesting twist and introduces "Tully", a young night nanny who is there to help Marlo.

But does she? Ironically yes. And it's an interesting point of the movie. Tully come into Marlo life to help her get through a "rough" stage because she knows Marlo loves her family and wants to be a good mom and wife but at the moment can't handle everything.


Goodness it's SO touching and amazing and needed. But sadly, it’s a break in Marlo's mental stability since Tully is not real, but is an alter ego for Marlo. And it's heartbreakingly sad that Marlo had to make Tully.

But the reality is that moms, whether new or many times over NEED help. Some more then others but ALL of us do. Raising a family takes A LOT emotionally, mentally and physically. I can testify to this!

And while TULLY has a dark surprise, overall the story and message isn't dark. Far from it. It shows how much Mothers love their families and will give ALL of themselves to be there. But we shouldn't have to. Not to the point of our mental health.

Giving a mother support and encouragement makes much a difference. And I was glad to see that Marlo received that from her husband and community in the end. I can only hope that the TULLY films helps bring needed awareness about postpartum care, mental illness and the need to be there for other mothers that's SO needed.


SYNOPSIS

Tully follows Marlo (Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, who is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Davis).

Also stars Mackenzie Davis (The Martian, “Black Mirror”), Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed, “Togetherness”) and Ron Livingston (The End of the Tour, Office Space).

Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal that needs some TLC? Then visit The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) for the special 'Stuffed Animal Repair' program in the “Art, Artists & You” exhibit happening from Tuesday, July 31 – Sunday, August 5 from 10 am to 5 pm.

During this program, kids can bring in their stuffed animal friend who needs fixing and also learn basic sewing techniques like stitching and stuffing, to repair old stuffed animals. With practice, they can even create their own!


Part interactive art studio, part art exhibition, “Art, Artists & You” is designed to encourage children and their families to explore self-expression and identity through the delights of art-making. Families can create stop motion animation, craft a model of a favorite pet, or collaborate on a massive wall hanging.

The exhibit, which runs through December 31, features four artists-in-residence selected on the basis of their work with specific materials.

The Children’s Potions & Planting Tea Party invites boys and girls ages 5-10, with their parents and favorite stuffed animal or teddy bear, to a monthly tea at the city rooftop garden Gallow Green at The McKittrick Hotel.

Families are transported to the whimsical world of The McKittrick while immersed in a secret garden overgrown with Sage, Trumpet Vines, Wisteria, Dogwood Trees and blooming Pansies, Black-eyed Susans and Geraniums.


During the party, kids learn about plants and gardening from the rooftop’s residents plus create magic potions with special powers to take home.




Admission includes a traditional high tea platter complete with Mini Sandwiches, Sausage Rolls, Cakes and Tarts, with refreshing Pink Lemonade and hands-on lessons in potions and planting.

Tickets are $25/person for this magical family experience. While all adults and young guests must have a reservation, dolls and teddy bear +1’s may enter free of charge and receive a miniature seat and personalized gift.

Now that ANT-MAN AND THE WASP has released in theaters, fans of the film will probably have a lot of comments for Director Peyton Reed, about the overall story-line, which was great and the ending credit scene, which was...so not great!

After screening the film for the L.A. #AntManandTheWaspEvent press junket, I couldn't wait to hear what Director Peyton Reed had to say about the scenes that made us go "aaaawwww" and the other that made us go "urggggghhhh!"

The Avengers: Infinity War Tie-in Moment

Peyton Reed: It was not completely planned in the beginning. We knew we were gonna have to deal with that thing at some point in some way. Actually, we weren't sure at the beginning.

We knew that our movie was gonna take place, it's sortta not only a sequel to Ant Man, but also to Civil War. Because we couldn't ignore what Scott Lange did in that movie. But we weren't always sure how we were gonna fit into the larger timeline with regards to Infinity War.

Peyton Reed: Somewhere during the process, this idea occurred to us like Oh, well we could do -- we could do something like that.

And it seemed to work for us tonally, and sort of allows us to do our very stand alone movie but, have it fit into the larger Marvel happenings.

The Morrissey Music

Peyton Reed: How that came about was for a very brief time, years ago, I played drums in a Morrissey/Smiths cover band called "Louder Than Bombs" and we played a few shows here in Los Angeles just for fun.

I learned that Morrissey, who's from Manchester, had a huge following in Los Angeles. And because of his particular singing style, it really occurred to us as something that Luis would know about and be into, particularly the idea that his Grandma only plays Morrissey.

Peyton Reed: It just seemed like one of the crazy things Luis would mention in the course of his conversation. And that is one of the things we were talking about, how are we gonna do it in this movie. How are we gonna do a version, of what we did with Luis in the first movie, that doesn't repeat it.

And so when the writers came up with the idea of the truth serum thing? Yeah, that was really fun.

But Morrissey, obviously we had to get his permission to use the songs and knowing how mercurial he is as a human being, I wasn't sure, but he to like the idea, so he said yes.

Cassie Lange as a Superhero

Peyton Reed: I think that everybody's aware, from the first Antman and now in the Antman and The Wasp, who Cassie Lange is in the comics and that she does become a hero. So I think we wanted to definitely start laying some groundwork for that possibility. I don't know what specific plans are but I really liked the idea.

It's fun to work with Abbey three years later now. I always love in movies when you see a little kid 6yrs in the first movie and now 10yrs, you see how she has sort of grown.

I like the idea that you have these glimpses, where she goes toe to toe with Agent Wu. And she covers for her Dad and she's got -- that side of Scott, you know, that's, a little mischievous and everything but she's a tough kid. And I really love the idea of doing that intimate scene, where she's talking about maybe needing a partner and in her mind, it's her and him.

Father and Daughter Theme

Peyton Reed: I think that's one of the things that I liked the most in the movie, is that Scott, the evolution of the Scott/Cassie relationship. It helps that Abbey is so good. She's such a really focused young Actor, and it's sort of rare.

Really, Fathers and Daughters is a real thematic. It certainly wasn't in the first one. We wanted to progress that in this movie, whether it's literal Fathers and Daughters, like Hank, and Hope and Scott and Cassie are more figurative like you know, Bill Foster and Ava, his ghost. I like the idea of furthering that theme.

In Ant-Man and The Wasp, Michael Douglas reprises his role as Hank Pym and takes us back into the quantum realm for a new adventure. During the L.A #AntManandTheWaspEvent press junket interviews, Douglas shared about being reunited with the cast and keeping the humor balanced with the story-line.

Being reunited with the Ant-Man cast

Michael Douglas: There’s just an inherent relaxation and joy normally about a sequel or why you look back in the old days, why actors and actresses work together or directors together, you don’t have to introduce yourself again, you know. You know each other.

There’s a comfort factor which makes it much easier. People know your own sense of humor. You’re not going to offend anybody. So, I mean the comfort factor is really nice.


Michael Douglas: I mean that combined with the fact that Paul is just a sweetheart. He’s just a great, great guy so it sets the tone.

You know, most of my career I’ve been number one on a call sheet, the lead. So to be in a supporting role, in a picture like this, you watch how he does it, you assume a lot of responsibility. If you’re smart, if you’re the first, you set the tone. You’re the first one on the set, you make everybody else comfortable to make their best performances possible. So, that part was great with Paul.


Michael Douglas: And I was excited for Evangeline because I remember, the end the first one, I show her Janet’s suit and there’s this look in her eye as Hope, when she sees her mother’s suit. But what I was looking at her when she was doing the scene, I saw Evangeline going I’m going to be a superhero.

I could see her. She’s loaded, you know. She was ready to go and excited. So, that part was all nice as far as with them.

Michael Douglas: And then you get that wonderful thing of Marvel does a great job of casting, obviously. Michelle was just such a treat. I'm a tremendous Michelle Pfeiffer fan. Never imagined ever getting a chance to work with her. Needless to say, to play 30 years younger. So, that was great.

And Larry Fishburne is, is quite an actor. And then this young lady Hannah John-Kamen, who they were all talking about almost like it was a sports team. We have this great rookie, this girl, she’s fantastic. And she really is. She’s wonderful.

Keeping the Dry Humor on Set for Ant-Man and The Wasp

Michael Douglas: This set was a lot of fun. I think we’ve all learned. I was trying to find my place in this since I did not plan on mentoring Scott. That was not my idea to take over the role of Ant Man, nor do I think he’s proper for my daughter. He was a burglar. So, I was trying to find kind of a dry, a little intellectually aloofness and all of that.

But as far as cracking up, we watch it. When you feel it bubbling up, we don’t let it go there. Because sometimes that happens, it’s hard to pull it back. And then you can lose a lot of time.

Michael Douglas: But with Paul it’s difficult because he ad libs so much. You know, I’m a little jealous of Paul because I’m kind of carrying the story line, and having to go home to research what the hell I’m talking about and all of this.

And Paul will just come in with some one-liner and steal the scene. And so, he’s unpredictable, wonderfully so.

How Ant-Man and The Wasp can connect people

Michael Douglas: I have history as a producer also, so normally when I’m acting or I may lead in a picture, I’m really looking out for the whole film. In that spirit, I know what my role as an actor is, but I know mostly what makes a good movie. And I guess what kind of separates me from most actors is that I’m not just thinking about my role.

Because I’m a producer, I want to be in a good movie. You want to make as good a movie as possible.

Michael Douglas: The thing that struck me about Ant Man ,and now Ant Man the Wasp, is the response that we're getting. It’s such a divisive world right now, both in our country and just around the world. Everything seems to be getting fractionalized.

One of the joys of this business is, you make a movie like this, it’s a worldwide success. And the audiences from every continent go to see this movie and they laugh like we laugh. And it just brings everybody kind of closer together. It’s actually the aspect of our industry which I admire the most. And it seems like a good time that we need that.

After screening ANT-MAN AND THE WASP and interviewing Laurence Fishburne during the #AntManandTheWaspEvent press junket in L.A, I have to say that Laurence does a great job of humanizing his character Bill Foster, and the issues that makes him a sorta "villain".

But there's more to this villain then you think, and by the end of the film you might think Bill Foster closer to hero then villain.

Becoming Part of the Marvel Universe & Joining Ant-Man and The Wasp

Laurence Fishburne: I’ve been reading for a long time, been watching the movies, too. I ran into the director of the Fantastic Four movie, Rise of the Silver Surfer - his name’s Tim Story - and I said to him, "hey man, I’m Norrin Radd". And he said, "who?" So I had to tell him about the origins of the Silver Surfer and Galactus.

And I was like, "I should play that part in it", so he was kind enough to cast me to do the vocal performance in that movie. So that was my first foray into the Marvel universe.

And then three or four years back, I wanted very much to be a part of the MCU because of the way it was progressing. Like they were doing such great things.



Laurence Fishburne: And Louis D’Esposito and I had worked together about thirty years ago - we were both on the Disney channel. So I just asked to have a meeting with him and said, "Look, I’ll do whatever you need me to do, but I really would like to be a part of the MCU. If there’s any way that you can, see that I can do that.

And they came back and said, oh, there’s this character, Bill Foster, who I was not aware of - oddly enough - because I wasn’t an Ant Man reader. I was like Spider Man, Fire Man, Thor, Hulk, Avengers, X-Men.

So they presented this character to me, and I met with the director, and we got on really well ‘cause he’s also a guy who’s, you know, in his fifties who loves comics. It just kind of- just kinda organically happened.

Being a "Black" MCU Character and role model for the African-American community

Laurence Fishburne: Well it’s great because, Marvel was being inclusive and they were really, really doing things that were diverse as early as ’68, you know.

Black Panther appears in the comics of ’68, Goliath appears in the ‘70s. Sam, the Falcon, appears in the ‘70s. Robbie appears in the ‘70s, and women are always out front in the Marvel Universe, and have been since the beginning.

So it’s nice that they’ve been able to take the source material and bring it into the now. To be a real reflection, or at least a closer reflection, to what the real world looks like.

The family theme and role of Bill Foster as a Father of sorts

Laurence Fishburne: It was really in the writing that Bill is a surrogate father, or a foster father to Ava (Ghost). So that was nice. ‘Cause it gave me something human to play.

I mean it’s one of the best things about the Ant Man character, as Paul Rudd plays it, is that his primary relationship, his most important relationship is with his daughter. And it’s executed, I think, brilliantly in both movies.

Playing a Bad Guy?

Laurence Fishburne: Villainy. There’s nothing wrong with villainy. Villainy is great. And, if you go way, way back, you go back forty years. You can see I did a lot of villainy coming up.

Heroes, villains, whatever it is, as long as you can make them human then it’s fun. You know, that’s like the objective as to whether it’s a hero or a villain. You wanna humanize them and allow the audience to have the experience. Maybe I don’t like what he’s doing or maybe I don’t like what she’s doing, but there’s something in them that reminds me of me.

When we first saw Evangeline Lilly on screen as Hope van Dyne in Ant-Man, she was fierce. Hope was a woman who was smart, confidence and witty as she beat up Scott during their training sessions. Ha!

Now in Ant-Man and The Wasp we get to see Hope fully embrace her role as The Wasp, with that same fierceness.

I love seeing a strong female on screen, so I was beyond excited to interview Evangeline Lilly about her role as The Wasp during my #AntManAndTheWaspEvent press junket trip to L.A. Listening to Evangeline share her thought about the impact of her role was just profound.

Being Inspired by Strong Female Superheroes

Evangeline Lilly: I used to fantasize about being Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. I was like obsessed with her. And partly because it's Michelle Pfeiffer in a skin-tight leather costume, owning it, and being fierce.

But, also, I think it was because there wasn't a lot to choose from, you know. There just weren't very many female superheroes. It was mostly male superheroes.

So, me and my sisters would sometimes pretend to be Spiderman or Batman or whoever else. And, you know, I had a moment recently where my seven-year old son was pretending to be The Wasp. And I still get goose bumps when I tell that story. It chokes me up, because that's a cultural shift, for a little boy to pretend to be a female superhero. This is no small thing.

Evangeline Lilly: And sometimes, I think -- we're making a mountain of a molehill, because there have been female superheroes in the MCU the whole time, and they're amazing, and strong, and kickass, and all of those things.

But I think what this moment in our culture is saying, is we know we've made some progress, and that's great, but we're still not equal, and that's clear by the fact that you've made 20 movies, and never had a female in the title. So, this is a big moment, and it is a big deal, and I don't want to downplay it.

Working with Paul Rudd

Evangeline Lilly: It's like, everybody loves Paul Rudd. He's so love-able, and this is gonna sound maybe like not giving him enough credit, but I really mean this cause he's just so freaking talented, but my favorite thing about working with Paul is watching the movie.

Because I watch it and I fall in love with him all over again. I love the movie, because I love Paul, and I'm in a movie, therefore, that I love, you know?

Working with Michelle Pfeiffer

Evangeline Lilly: Oh, it was a dream, to work with Michelle. Because the weird thing is, an actor you can be obsessed with someone on the screen, and then you meet them, and they just destroy it for you. And you're just like, "I wish I'd never met you."

I'm like, "I want you to be perfect, you know?" And that's impossible. Who can live up to that? Michelle can. She can. She's perfect, like, there's no flaws. She's nice. She's generous. She's smart. She's funny. She's intelligent. She's considerate. She's talented, and of course, she is the hottest sixty-something or however old she is you're ever gonna meet.

And so playing her daughter was an incredible honor, and also, I had to just bite my tongue, 'cause every day, I wanted to just be like, "Can you be my mentor?"

Working with Michael Douglas

Evangeline Lilly: I was so astounded by him in the first film, because I was the opposite with him. I was kind of ignorant to him. Like I watched him in Romancing the Stone, and was like, "Cool. Great romance. He's cute." I was eight, or whatever I was, but I didn't keep up with his career. I just knew he was a big movie star.

So, when I took the job, I was like, "Great, Michael Douglas, big name, gonna help the film. It's gonna help our numbers." And then I started working with him and was like, "Oh. Whoa."

Evangeline Lilly: He's so good. He's such a charismatic, present, powerful human being that when he starts to perform, he just changes the molecules of the room. You're suddenly transported to the place you're pretending to be, and so when I read the script for the second film, and I found out that I was going to get an enormous amount of work with him, and that we would be super close and super tactile and loving and like, we were partners after the really difficult journey that we went through in the first film?

That was the thing that I was the most excited about, to get more screen time with Michael. And Michelle, of course.

Training for the Fight Scenes

Evangeline Lilly: I actually spent way less time worrying about getting my body rock hard and developing, you know, visual muscles as I spent in front of a mirror with my stunt doubles, making sure that we didn't just take a dude, and put him in a woman's body. I didn't want to send the message that in order to be powerful, strong, capable and tough, you have to be masculine, macho, and a dude.

I wanted to show that we are strong because of our femininity, not in spite of it. I wanted to show that, when Hope was Hope, and she was emotional, vulnerable, smiling, pleasant and happy and not like, just badass bitch, you know.


Evangeline Lilly: I wanted to show that when she was fighting, by incorporating grace, elegance and femininity into the fight, it's ballet.

Like no dude could do that, 'cause men can't move that way', because they don't have the flexibility, agility or the petiteness to come out a back window and in a front window. They just couldn't. Let's examine how a woman could have an advantage over a man, physically, because she's a woman. Not because she figured out how to move like a man. And that was something that I was really passionate about.

SYNOPSIS
