When it comes to bugs, I confess I'm not exactly a fan. Who likes bug bites?! But ironically someone has to like bugs and study them, so we can get the benefits like insecticides and repellents!

Keeping this in mind, I looked forward to interviewing Saki Milton, Founder of The GEMS Camp (www.thegemscamp.org), STEM educator and advocate, about how families can encourage kids to be interested in nature.

We also talked about her partnership with STEM™, a line of bug-fighting insecticides and repellents powered by plant-based active ingredients

Saki Milton: This partnership between myself and the STEM brand is the result that STEM, which is signs technology, engineering and mathematics, has really become more important in our students curriculum.

So we really wanted to find a way to highlight and to develop passion and curiosity for students in terms of exploring the world around them through nature and science. So that's why we're working together.

So this partnership is to really drive that passion and curiosity for science and nature, at home with the next generation, to help parents be able to do that.

Encouraging Interest in STEM Careers

Saki Milton: My background is in STEM education and I'm extremely passionate about, advocating for girls in STEM, especially girls of color.

So there's still this huge underrepresentation of women in the STEM fields. And even more disparities are revealed when you're talking about women of color. So this starts in in school, for a variety of reasons.

But to highlight the types of careers that are out there for kids interested in science, there's a just so many. Think of astronomy. If your kid isn't just into stars, think of veterinarian sciences, if they're into animals zoology.

Saki Milton: But particular, to this discussion, entomology is a STEM career pathway that is quite promising. Because entomologists, their expertise is used to develop products like the STEM brand of mosquito repellent and the bug killing insecticide.

So these career paths are very very important.

Tips to Make Science & Nature Interesting

Saki Milton: I had amazing science and math teachers that really propelled me into this particular line of work. Those people made it interesting and fun, and sparked my curiosity.

So to that end, the advice that i would on how you do that, is to spark curiosity. Encourage kids to embrace science at home, on family outing, etc.

You don't always have to go to the ballpark or some expensive adventure park, just doing nature walks. Nature Museums, Natural History Museums, Planetariums, all those types of places that are right there in our cities, are great places to begin sparking that curiosity.

Saki Milton: There's some simple at home experiments, like putting a leaf under water and then watching that bubble form, the bubble that appeared, that means that leaf is breathing.

Kids will start loving science, when they actually do science at home.

How to Self-Care

Saki Milton: Well, I'm a fan of yoga. I'm a fan of taking nature walks. I like looking at creation and all of its beauty. I love to read. I love to watch old films.

And I just really like being with my family, more than anything.

Each year The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival has a "Student Design Contest" presented by Temple University, which gives local students the opportunity to design a lantern for the Festival.

This year the students were invited to submit a drawing of a rabbit to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. Then the winning drawings was crafted into lanterns and displayed during the Festival.


While at the festival this year, I saw the student's rabbit lanterns and were so impressed with their creativity and rabbit designs.

To learn more about the contest and how it feels to have your drawings made into an lantern for all to see, I interviewed the 2023 winner Sadie Olszewski.

Motivation to Enter Contest

Sadie Olszewski: My mom's friend daughter entered one year. So my mom wanted me to enter this year. I also wanted to do it, because it looked really cool.

Coming up with Rabbit Design

Sadie Olszewski: I wanted to do a rabbit that was different, so I made it colorful. I wanted it to be colorful, so it can show that I'm creative.

Advice for Students

Sadie Olszewski: When making a design, make it different because if it's just a regular design that people expect to see in the competition, it won't standout.

Just be creative. Make it yours so that it shows "you" through it. So if you win, you get a sense of "you" not just a sense of "art" that you did.

Seeing Her Winning Design as a Lantern

Sadie Olszewski: I felt it was really cool because, I didn't know it was going to be that big. And everyone was taking pictures, it was really cool.


After my interview with Sadie, I briefly spoke with her mom Alison Kurowski, who shared her thoughts about the contest and her daughter being the 2023 winner.

Alison Kurowski: We were absolutely thrilled that she won. It felt so special being in Philadelphia and having the opportunity to participate in this way. As a younger person, in something that is culturally relevant, as well as Philadelphia relevant.

Alison Kurowski: You don't see competitions for younger people all that often, especially one where the recognition is so public. We're always proud of Sadie, we think she's an amazing artist. And to have her lantern sitting in a park in Philadelphia is just such an honor.

Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival

The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is currently in Franklin Square, June 21 – August 13, 2023, with magnificent steel-framed and silk-wrapped giant lighted artistic sculptures.

In addition to the light installations, visitors can enjoy live cultural stage performances, see the choreographed fountain light show, taste Asian cuisine and American comfort food, drink a toast at the Dragon Beer Garden, and shop for Chinese folk artists’ crafts created on site as well as Festival-themed merchandise.

The Festival will illuminate Franklin Square at 6th & Race Streets in Historic Philadelphia. Guests can also play Philly Mini Golf, ride the Parx Liberty Carousel, and more.

Importance of Portraying Breastfeeding

Lauren J. Turner: It is definitely important to have representation. Being able to see yourself is important and sometimes you don't get the opportunity. Art gives us the opportunity to go into spaces that we would not necessarily see.

When I was breastfeeding my son, even before that, I did not get an opportunity to like see nursing happen. I never saw anybody breastfeeding growing up.

Lauren J. Turner: And then when I did it with my son, I had a family member tell me to put my breast away. Like, you know, as if it was something wrong. But the art is to celebrate that moment.

Connecting with Philip Avent

Lauren J. Turner: I think we connected via email or social media. But I use the bottles with my son. But with my daughter, I decided to just nurse from my body, but with my son, I needed the opportunity to get, you know, get time alone for my mental health.

Working with the brand means a lot to me because, they have the same ideology that I have, which is to celebrate these moments and allow people to feel comfortable with doing it.

Sometimes bottle feeding is absolutely necessary. Sometimes it's an option and having an option is important.

Becoming Part of Women To Know: Tech Titans

Carrie Bernans: Basically they reached out to my team, they were interested in me joining, because not only am I an actress and stunt woman, that knows the technical aspect of film and tv.

But I also invest in tech through startups, as well as built my own startup in the text space when I was 18.

I was interested! We just had to make sure that the dates aligned. I'm expecting a baby any moment now, so I wanted to make sure I could fly to New York. I was literally in New York for like 24 hours, because I was working on another project back here in Los Angeles.

It was an incredible crew of majority African-American Caribbean black people.

Impact of This for Her and Other Black Techies

Carrie Bernans: It means a lot, honestly. For myself, I work really hard since I was a young child, and I never really look for recognition as far as like you know, being on a cover of magazine or getting awards and stuff of that sort. I felt like I've accomplished a lot in my short, like 30 years of life.

But sometimes we don't sit back and realize how much we've accomplished. Sometimes we can get on this train of just waiting to level up, in the next thing and then the next thing and then the next thing.

It made me really just take a moment in, and to be like, wow, I've actually done something and I should be proud of it.

Carrie Bernans: And also it makes you want to give back even more. I'm already a creature of reaching back and bringing someone up, as I come up. Because I believe I wouldn't be where I'm, if it wasn't for other people that took the time to mentor me or to offer a word of advice etc.

Then the women that I met, I didn't know them personally, though I heard of some of them before, but we were able to connect more offline, and off of this project, and we're going to work on some incredible things together.

Carrie Bernans: Also seeing black women at tech space is very a minuscule thing, I mean it exists but on a comparison to the white males or Asian males in the tech space, it's a big disparity.

So I think that it also motivates and inspires other people, especially the younger generation, that is looking to get into the tech space. It's a very inspirational moment.

Process of Transition from One Field to Another

Carrie Bernans: When I decided the corporate world, just wasn't for me, but I still love the aspect of having the entrepreneurship, being driven working in the tech field. I was like, how can I combine these two?

So as I went ahead to Hollywood Los Angeles to chase my dream with acting in entertainment, I was like, even if I can't spend 8 - 12 hours a day, working on some new tech project, what projects can I invest in that align with my vision of what I would like? Whose board could I serve on, you know?

Carrie Bernans: How can I also maybe a co-founder and help them raise equity in order to make this project happen? And I wanted to focus on minority projects. So, a lot of the projects I invest in are either women-owned or black-owned. Really just minorities. I'm targeting people that I really want to support and see more of.

Experiencing and Overcoming Challenges as a Black Woman in Tech

Carrie Bernans: There's so many different challenges, I think you have as a woman of color. For one, I've been to 19 plus countries. And I speak six languages. And I would say just a general overall, no matter what business I have done from entertainment to tech, there's this perception, especially in foreign countries.

They already have this perception of black women, and in most cases, they first off look at them as a woman. And unfortunately, women are not like the first people that people respect.

They respect them in a way of like, oh, you're a woman you can have this seat. But as far as negotiating on deals they think like, where's your boss? I am the boss. Oh you're the boss? Yeah. I'm the boss.

Carrie Bernans: Or they over sexualize things. I realized that people have this ideal of these sexual fantasies. So they're doing business with you, but then they're also like, is it true.....? I'm like, what the heck, we're talking business here, like deals negotiations.

Lay boundaries right on the front end! You know, we live in a society where you shouldn't have cover up in this way or do this in that way, but one of the things that I do believe is that, unfortunately, it's first impression and it's an impression that people are going to take.

Carrie Bernans: So I keep a very business. I will wear pants or if it's a skirt, I wear it a little longer. I'm not coming there to go on a date with you. I'm coming there to do business with you, and I want that on the front end.

Then secondarily, if someone says, you know you're beautiful or something, then I'm like thank you, you're looking nice yourself. So you know this deal is blah blah blah.

I just re-circle the conversation back to focus on the deal, so it's not being rude or intrusive, because that's the other thing. Then the guys, all of a sudden they seem like, oh my god, this girl is such a blah blah blah or she's so rude or whatever can't take a compliment.

Carrie Bernans: So I'm just like, oh thank you. You know, you stay a professional.

And another way is just have someone come with you, even if they're not 100% in the business with you per se, but they're just the person to be there. So they know it's two because they're rarely going to say something if someone else is there.

Support for Entrepreneurs

Carrie Bernans: Entrepreneurship is already so challenging. I think that as much research as you can do, and groups that you can connect with outside of just being alone.

Because yes, as an entrepreneur you're on a solo journey, but at the same time, you do find those communities and teams. And at the end of the day, if you want to go further, you go further with a team and you have to learn how to build that.

And even if you don't have the money and resources to do that right away, you just have to find that free community on Facebook or network.

How to Self-Care

Carrie Bernans: Lately. I think like the last like couple years, I've been finally getting massages, that I tell people to get themselves. And I've been taking a moment and taking a day, and sometimes I will just say, I am rushing to get, like, all of this done, and I'm trying to fit this in and put that in, and sometimes, I just have to be okay with saying, it's gonna take two hours.

Because I have to take, like a deep breath and a break, or I'm gonna break. The reality is, a tow truck can't tow itself, you know, and it may help everyone else, but you do have to take a moment back and take care of you.

And I enjoy traveling, although I travel mainly for like work and stuff. I like to take a day or two, while I'm working and explore around and just be like, all right, it's Cary's day. Let's be free.

For the 10th annual SHARKFEST, programming can be found across Disney platforms, including Disney+, Hulu, ABC and ESPN, in addition to National Geographic, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo MUNDO, offering a deep dive experience for SHARKFEST fans.

National Geographic has also partnered with Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS) to encourage diversity and inclusion in the shark sciences field and inspire the next generation of scientists.

I was able to interview Gibbs Kuguru, a Kenyan shark scientist who studies the DNA of sharks, about his episode and what he wants families to learn about sharks!

How started studying sharks

Gibbs Kuguru: I began working with Sharks in 2012, so just about 10 years ago. I was previously doing a PreMed degree but I wasn't keen about going to med school. I had the option of going diving with sharks. So I decided lets do the shark thing and the rest is history.

I think this is a good life lesson. Sometimes you just have to take a risk. I didn't have any idea about what it will be like or what I would get out of it. Taking that risk gave me the opportunity to do something outside my comfort zone. And I feel in love with it.

Gibbs Kuguru: Sharks gave me that passion and drive to be able to do this type of work.

Which episode as an expert

Gibbs Kuguru: I worked on Camo Sharks. This episode is about Shark skin and the different adaptions that shark skin has cause them to behave in different ways. I think this is a really cool look into both the history of the animal but how scientist come up with research questions, in hopes of answering problems in nature.

Through this episode, you see us go out into the field, have some embarrassing moments time to time, but ultimately come out with a win.

Working with National Geographic for SHARKFEST

Gibbs Kuguru: My mentor and co-host on the show, had actually reached out to NatGeo about this idea, which we had in the pipeline for a few years. Working with NatGeo on this project, gave me a steady level of comfort.

Because I knew, that they cared about the Science, you see all the other episodes in SHARKFEST, with actual researchers from a diverse array of backgrounds working on all different types of problems.

What it's like for a black man in a science field?

Gibbs Kuguru: First I'm Kenyan, so I'm African, and I can honestly say anytime I go back home or someone from home talks to me about this, they're like how, are you doing that?! Where did this come from?!

I realized one of the biggest barriers to having more African marine scientist is not enough representation within programs like this, but also the resources allocated for African marine scientist to do this type of work, are few in comparison to what you'd find in other parts of the world.

Gibbs Kuguru: I was really lucky, how I go to my journey, but it didn't come without taking a risk. And just embracing the adventurous spirit. I think that's exactly what you have to do, nothing is promised in this world and in life. You can't give up. You just got to keep going.

What you want families to know about sharks?

Gibbs Kuguru: I'm aware that sharks have a bad reputation and that people are afraid of sharks. I know because I was also afraid of sharks growing up. But one thing that helped me see these animals in a different light, is being able to experience them firsthand.

Then you start to realize that the stories being told about sharks in most of the news and print media is not true. They are wild animals, for sure. But they're not blood thirst man eaters.

I think once you realize they're wild animals, of course there is an element of danger, we learn to live around them, observe them and respect them.

Gibbs Kuguru: The conditions under which I go out to sea, we don't just go out on any given day. We make sure we have the fairest conditions. We make sure we observe the animals before getting in the water with them. Just to make sure everything is alright.

Most of the time, when people have negative shark incidents, it's because they went into an environment, which they didn't understand well. I think that's hugely important, once you understand it.

Song of the North, an epic Persian story told through shadow puppetry, projected animation and more, had it's US premiere at BAM's Harvey Theater stage, and we had the chance to see the first show, along with meeting creator and director Hamid Rahmanian.

The show itself is an amazing mix of shadow puppetry, animation and musical storytelling. We loved it and highly recommend to families who enjoy live theater or want to experience something different.

Song of the North offers a visual experience that keeps you engaged and excited to see what's next. From watching a hero going on an adventure, to seeing how a princess charms using her voice, to a battle with a large scale monster, it's all told on screen? or better behind screen in an engaging way.

Apart from the visual, there's the culture and historical aspects of the show. Just in time for Persian (Iranian) New Year (Sunday, March 20), you will learn a bit about Persian history and folklore through the storytelling and personalities of the historic men and women portrayed. Which is a nice exposure for families.

Overall Song of the North offers a lot from cinematic theater performance to raising culture awareness.

Interview with Hamid Rahmanian for Song of the North

Can you share why you use puppets to tell the story of Song of the North?

Hamid: Puppets are very expressive and can inspire imagination. They connect with all age groups. The art form is also unique, ethereal, and magical. I really like playing in that realm. It's satisfying to watch 2D forms come to life so that the audience forgets they are watching puppets and becomes immersed in the story.

Why do you think the storyline is relatable to all cultures?

Hamid: The story is universal. The themes of ego, the naivety of youth, the complications of life, and forgiveness are all universal. Everyone can relate to the struggles that the characters go through and how they all grow as a result of their adventure. The story may take place in certain geography but they are timeless and relatable.

What's your favorite childhood memory of celebrating Persian (Iranian) New Year?

Hamid: Getting together with family, the house full of people. I remember eating from the overflowing bowls of sweets and candies, the delicious meals, and especially receiving brand new, crisp bills (money) as gifts from our elders.

How can US families honor and celebrate Persian (Iranian) New Year?

Hamid: Spring is a time of renewal. Do some spring cleaning, visit family members, definitely eat some fish and herbed rice (it’s a tradition for every Nowruz), and buy some fresh Spring flowers like hyacinths to make your house smell good.

Over 400 handmade puppets are used to tell the story of Manijeh, a courageous heroine who uses her strengths and determination to rescue her beloved and help prevent a war. Adapted from the Book of Kings (Shahnameh), a historical and cultural touchstone that is a national treasure in Iran, Song of the North challenges the Eurocentric worldview of art and storytelling.

The multi-disciplinary show is created, designed, and directed by Hamid Rahmanian, a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship-winning filmmaker/visual artist. Song of the North tells the story of Manijeh, a heroine from ancient Persia, who uses her strengths and talents to reconcile Iran and Turan's warring kingdoms and rescue her beloved Bijan from a perilous predicament of her own making.

It will be the first puppet theater production to be presented on BAM's Harvey Theater stage. The production runs March 5 at 2pm and March 12 at 2pm and 7pm.

Waffles + Mochi has released on Netflix introducing children and families to different food and cultures with each episode. During one episode, Chef Bricia Lopez shows Waffles and Mochi how to cook delicious Latin recipes, including her famous mole.

To celebrate the release of Waffles & Mochi, I interviewed Chef Bricia Lopez about her episode, which highlighted using salt and her advice for families who want to cook more together.

How Bricia Lopez became part of Waffles & Mochi

The production team for Waffles & Mochi reached out and shared the show idea promoting cooking and healthy eating with children. They visited my home, I made mole and learned that my episode would focused on the importance of salt.

Which made me so happy. I was so excited because I absolutely love salt. To be able to represent salt with such an iconic Oaxacan dish like mole, was an absolute honor.

It was so much fun to have Waffles and Mochi here, to be able to cook with them and have my family a part of it. My son is so excited to see himself in the show. You have no idea.

How did you decide which recipe to highlight for Waffles & Mochi

In my episode, Waffles & Mochi had just come from making cookies for Mrs. Obama, and understanding the way that salt really enhances flavor. It's a flavor enhancer at the end of the day. So I just thought that chocolate and salt enhance the flavor of mole.

Mole is not a chocolate sauce, by any means. I think that's a misconception it has. So I really wanted to bring it out and represent it in a way that people would relate to.

The way that salt enhance flavor, so does chocolate. It's a balance of sweetness and savory, that make mole such an important dish in our culture. And really it's a combination of so many flavors to create something new. So that why we chole mole.

Tips for Sharing Culture and Cooking Together

I was so blessed to grow up in Oaxaca, in an atmosphere where my mom would make home cooked meals everyday. So I grew up watching her, learning from her and looking up to her. I think because of that, I just innately gravitated towards that.

For me, I think that I was able to transfer that knowledge to my children by being present in the kitchen with them every day.

Also I have a restaurant, where we focus on Oaxacan cooking. Being able to have those two things together, it allowed me to show that to my kid.

I look at the kitchen, like a sport. My child right now isn't involved in any sports, but he's involved in the kitchen. And I think the same level of excitement he'd feel making a goal or basket, that's the same feeling he gets when finishes a dish.

I let him be, I don't control anything. I don't say that's to much or that's to little. It was difficult for me in the beginning, because I wanted to that's to much, or your going to break something, or going to cut your finger.

But I let go and said, I can't control him. That's the only way he's going to gain self autonomy, and gain confidence. I'm having so much fun watching him.

In connection with International Day of the Girl (October 11), Disney has released their new global #DreamBigPrincess video series offering advice and inspiration on achieving success for the next generation of young female leaders around the globe.

I remember when I first learned about #DreamBigPrincess campaign, I was so impressed that Disney recognized and encouraged young girls to presue their various interests, outside of being a princess. It's great that Disney is expanding the idea and the #DreamBigPrincess campaign.



The #DreamBigPrincess video series, produced and directed by young women from the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up initiative, shares the stories of 20 trailblazing women across technology, entertainment, medicine, law, sports, arts, science, fashion and politics to show the next generation what’s possible if you dream big.

I love seeing the different areas that young girls are interested in, so I was excited to interview Mariana Anaya (Mexico) and Alyssa Gandini (Brazil), two of the young ladies part of the new #DreamBigPrincess video series.



Mariana had the chance to interview Monica Andrea Lopez Hidalgo, who's a Neuroscientist.

What does #DreamBigPrincess mean to you?

Mariana Anaya: Dream Big Princess means giving new and fresh role models that will inspire them to be a Princess by just being themselves.

Alyssa Gandini: For me, this project is all about believing unbelievable things are possible. I never imagined anything like this could ever happen to me, and I think this is a trait we all share as participants. I signed up for it humbly, and later discovered that I should be proud of myself as I am proud of all the other women who are involved in this with us.

Alyssa Gandini: If I could choose one expression to translate what the Dream Big Princess project is to me, it would be "empowerment chain”. I feel empowered and inspired when I see this same feeling in the women who surrounded me in this project and, because of that, I want other girls to feel the same. So on, so forth. It’s a chain.

What was it like being part of the DreamBigPrincess video series?

Mariana Anaya: It was a one in a lifetime experience, I got to interview an amazing woman I look up to and gained 20 sisters in the process.

Alyssa Gandini: It was an unique, inspiring and empowering experience. I learned so much about others, but also about myself, through the creative process we went through, since the workshop in D.C until the launch date. These have been some crazy three months and I loved every step of it.

Alyssa Gandini: However, I guess my favorite part is meeting all these 20 other girls with completely different backgrounds from my own that made such an incredible work with their subjects. Stories inspire us to follow our dreams, and in a world where times are ever so hard, it makes me so happy to see anyone can be a storyteller. Therefore, anyone can be an inspiration to the other, creating a better world and raising better people.

Who is your favorite Disney Princess and why?

Mariana Anaya: My favorite princess is Merida because she defied authority and stood up against her own family to fight for what she believed in. Also, her hair is amazing.

Alyssa Gandini: I have two I look up to the most. The first one is Ariel. As a kid she inspired me to sing, to be myself, to be brave, to chase my dreams and to create the world I wanted to live in. I think it is important for us to reinterpret a lot of the Disney’s Princesses stories and understand that what they live goes far beyond the classical “I need a prince to live”. And Ariel was that case for me, that is why today, I still admire her so much.

Alyssa Gandini: My grown up side, however, screams “Mulan” every time I hear this question. Her relationship with her family, specially her father, reminds me of my own. She inspires me still to be fierce, true, brave, honest, humble, kind, clever and to do whatever it takes to protect the people you love, even if they hurt you. Her story touches me like no other and it makes me cry every single time that all of China bows to her.

How did you first learn about your interviewee? What stood out about her for you?

Mariana Anaya: I contacted Dr.Monica by email and she loved the project. What stood out most about her was her research, since I’m really interested in neuroscience.

Alyssa Gandini: In Washington we had to come up with options for our subjects, and Paola Carosella was already on this huge list of women I thought was inspiring for me. That is the thing though, it was a big list. So we started to narrow it down to people we though that would bring up the most diversity in the campaign and, of course, that would still be an amazing inspiration to me and all the girls and boys who would see this.

Alyssa Gandini: For me, Paola has always been an amazing person to look up to because of her values. She always came to me as someone honest, brave, fierce, decisive, objective and thoughtful of her surroundings and actions. She is true to herself in a way not many people are today and, of course this stands out for me, because it is something I value so much and that I believe people need to have the courage to do so more often. Plus, she created her world from scratch and that is simply amazing!

What did your interviewee share during the interview that will encourage you and other girls interested in this field?

Mariana Anaya: She told me that I don’t need to have the greatest ambition to dream big, and by being ñassionate about my work and trying my hardest, I can make my dreams come true.

Alyssa Gandini: I think something that really touched me in the interview and that will touch and inspire other girls, in particular, is the fact that we, as women, carry this huge weight on our backs which is “guilt”. Paola teaches us that we don’t have to make things perfect the first time we try them and that it would be naive of us to think we can make it all by ourselves, without any help what so ever.

She says it’s ok to fail at first, it’s ok to ask for help and that we should surround ourselves with people that encourage us to do what we want and that will help us get there. And I believe that is great advice, no matter which area you are pursuing in your life/career.

This year’s video series builds on the success of the #DreamBigPrincess Global Photography series, which saw 19 female photographers from 15 countries capture inspiring stories of real-world women and girls to encourage kids to reach for their goals.

The campaign reached millions of families around the world unlocking a $1 million donation to Girl Up in less than five days. The images from the multi- award-winning campaign were also honored with an exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

The initiative is part of Disney’s ongoing Dream Big, Princess campaign that encourages kids everywhere to dream big by highlighting key story moments and inspiring qualities that each Disney Princess showcases through her adventures, such as Merida’s bravery, Cinderella’s kindness or Tiana’s perseverance. This year Residence Inn by Marriott announced La La Anthony as their 2016 Resident Mom of the Year, and invited me to interview her! For those that know, La La is mom to son Kiyan and wife to basketball husband Carmelo Anthony.

But that not all. La la is also a radio and television personality; actress and beauty entrepreneur; along with best-selling author and producer. Talk about a woman with many talents.


During our interview La La Anthony shared why she partnered with Residence Inn by Marriott, how she balances career and motherhood, and how she stays fit so she can wear amazing dresses to places like the Met Gala.

Onica {MommyFactor}: Tell me about your partnership with Residence Inn. What are some things you are excited about?

La La Anthony: I'm excited to really honor and celebrate moms who are amazing and just do it all. I feel like, as a mom myself, sometimes no one tell us "you're doing a great job" as a mom who has to balance everything. So with Residence Inn it's nice to celebrate moms. I'm their Resident Mom 2016, which is an amazing honor because I work really hard at trying to balance everything.

Residence Inn also did an amazing event earlier with the American Red Cross and some of the mom and mom volunteers. To celebrate them, we did makeovers and all this fun stuff, just making women feel confident and beautiful. We had a great lunch where I got to talk to every body. It was really nice.

Onica {MommyFactor}: What feature of Residence Inn, do you personally like?

La La Anthony: I love the idea that there's kitchens in the rooms. As a mom with a kid, a kitchen is so essential, a nice fridge is essential. You don't want to spend all this money ordering room service or go outside. You want to be able to cook and have your everything in your own area.

I know my son is specific with certain things that he likes, so we can bring it with us. That's really one of the main features that I like.

And I just love that the Residence Inn rooms have a more at home feel, opposed to feeling like we're at a hotel. Those are a few of the things that's I really like.

Onica {MommyFactor}: You spoke about balancing it all. What are some simple ways that you try to keep it all together and balanced?

La La Anthony: It's funny you asked. My husband was just texting me about it today. I think the main thing is just always finding 5 or 10 minutes a day to yourself. To get your thoughts together. I can get overwhelmed sometimes and feel like I can't do it all. So it's nice to take 5 minutes, just take it all in and then plan the day out.

Also I have an amazing support system in my mom and my family that really help me kinda balance it all.


Onica {MommyFactor}: You are very active on social media, sharing bits of your family. Sometimes social media does attack families so how do you set protective boundaries.

La La Anthony: I think that's a personal choice for everyone, what's too much or too little. For me with my son, I wanted him to be a young boy having fun and not worry about Instagram and all this. But at the same time, he's is aware of it. I still post pictures of him every now and then because he's an important part of my life. I still want to show and share with people.

But I don't over flow it with picture of him. I think everyone has to draw the line with what's too much or little for them.


Onica {MommyFactor}: Do you allow your son any kind of social media privileges?

La La Anthony: No. Not at all. My mom raised me with the mindset of everything in due time. There's a time for everything. In this generation, everyone is trying to rush everything. But you wanna let kid be kids and kinda come into that in their own time.


Onica {MommyFactor}: My last question is about the Met Gala. Seriously you rocked that dress. As a mother, as a woman, as a wife, we're all trying to be healthy and stay in shape. How do you make to be healthy and keep fit?


La La Anthony: I really have to wake up early and get to the gym. It's like anything, I have to motivate myself because who wants to get up early and go to the gym? That's the last thing you want to do, you want to sleep and relax.

But it's essential to feeling good and looking good so I try to make time for it. When I start traveling, it gets a little hardier to stay on course. But I challenge myself to really stay on top of it. Finding different ways including treadmill, workout in my room, etc.

Just try to add some type of physical activity to the day.

After our interview La La headed down to The Resident Mom award event. During the event La La accepted her new title, flowers and gifts before mingled with guests.

I recently enjoyed afternoon tea with Bobbie Thomas, (Style Editor for NBC's TODAY show) and Dr. Owen Davis (President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)) in connection with National Infertility Awareness Week (April 24-29).

During out tea time we discuss the topic of infertility, some myths surrounding this issue and how women (and their husbands/partners) can become more informed about their health.

Bobbie shared about the issues surrounding her infertility (body image, relationship stressors, being in the public eye while going through something so personal) and how she felt facing the treatment repeatedly until the success of having her son.

“When my husband and I decided to start a family, I didn’t anticipate how difficult it would be. I planned for so many things in my professional life, but it hadn’t occurred to me to plan for my personal dreams as well,”.

“It’s never too early to start having conversations about fertility and to find a trusted doctor who can provide you with the real facts and help you make the best decisions, whether you’re planning to start a family now, or think you may want to in the future.” Bobbie Thomas said.

While I knew that some women faced infertility, like many of you, I didn't know exactly what caused it or what these woman could do. Some people say having a baby later in life is easy, if you’re healthy and in good shape.Or, that issues with fertility are usually the woman’s fault.



There's SO many old wives tales and misconceptions surrounding fertility.


To help me learn fertility facts, I spoke with Dr. Owen Davis about some myths/misconceptions. Dr. Own stressed that more people should become informed. Ask your doctor questions, speak with other women and couples dealing with fertility concerns and above all gets the facts!

With NYC families going back to school this week, the announcement made by Vanessa Williams during a recent Staples event with Think It Up and Donors Choose was so touching.

As a parent with a child in public school, I know first hand how much students and teachers NEED this type of help. Since entering my son into the public school system, I've stayed connected with his teachers.

I've seen how it's a real struggle every school year for them to make sure the kids are equipped with supplies and resources.

A recent survey conducted by Staples found almost three-quarters of parents agree that teachers in their communities inspire their students. Additionally, the survey revealed that 76 percent agree that a lack of school supplies is a significant challenge for schools today. Most teachers spend more than $400 of their own money each year to provide supplies and materials for their classrooms.


After hearing the announcement, I had the chance to interview Vanessa Williams, Actress and Think It Up ambassador, to learn more about this initiative.

What motivated her to be a part of sharing the news

Vanessa Williams: Both of my parents were teachers, so I’ve seen firsthand how much teachers give to help their students achieve success.

Vanessa Williams: I’m thrilled that Think It Up, together with DonorsChoose.org and Staples, is taking this opportunity to give back to the teachers of New York City Public Schools and all of the students whose lives they will impact this school year.

But Vanessa isn't all about talk. She shared how she is personally donating her stipend, that covers her speaking at this event, to a middle school for boys so they can continue to make a positive difference in their lives.

Staples, Inc. announced that it funded 176 local classroom projects in New York City, as part of its recent $10 million pledge to Think it Up™, a new national initiative of the Entertainment Industry Foundation that seeks to inaugurate a new movement in support of students, teachers and schools, helping to create a culture of excitement about learning everywhere in America.

This fall, Think It Up, in partnership with DonorsChoose.org, will launch a platform to fund student-powered, teacher-led learning projects in classrooms across the country.


Now, in New York, Staples fully funded every 9th-12th grade project on DonorsChoose.org in New York City Public Schools. More than $173,000 was donated to help 132 teachers fulfill classroom needs and helped 25,858 students across 93 schools in New York City Public Schools.

The flash funding in New York is part of Staples’ $10 million pledge to Think It Up which will inspire students to pursue their passions by working on collaborative learning projects.

Since its founding in 2000, DonorsChoose.org has helped fund more than 236,000 classroom projects for teachers and impacted more than 14 million students.
