The American Museum of Natural History sleepover program—A Night at the Museum: The Overnight Experience—will return on October 24, 2025.

Tickets for the first three sleepovers – which will be offered on a monthly basis – will go on sale on starting September 30 for Museum Members at select levels and on October 7 for the general public.

Available for kids 6–12 and their caregivers, A Night at the Museum: The Overnight Experience promises a return to the magic of the original program with new adventures and activities.

From touring the Museum’s storied exhibition halls with flashlights to themed hands-on explorations, live presentations, scavenger hunts, group games, and more, the sleepovers offer the ultimate afterhours Museum journey.

The first program of its kind, inaugurated in 2006 alongside the family movie Night at the Museum, the sleepovers offer a unique and unforgettable experience for guests to explore the Museum after dark before drifting off to sleep underneath the Blue Whale or surrounded by other iconic Museum exhibits.

Overnight Experience Highlights

• Guided flashlight tours of the Museum’s third and fourth floor exhibition galleries, including the legendary fossil halls that feature towering dinosaurs like the Titanosaur, the Margaret Mead Hall of Pacific Peoples where the Rapa Nui (Easter Island) moai cast featured in the movie Night at the Museum is displayed, and more 
• Self-guided explorations of the first and second floors of the Museum, including the lifelike dioramas of the Akeley Hall of African Mammals, live insect displays in the Susan and Peter J. Solomon Family Insectarium, dazzling specimens in the Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals, and other exhibits 
• Group games in the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, trivia, scavenger hunts, karaoke, a bedtime story in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, and other fun and engaging activities 
• A commemorative keepsake, a voucher for future admission, and a private shopping experience in the Museum gift shop with exclusive merchandise

One adult (21+) is required per five children ages 8–12, and one adult per child is required for children under age 8.

Children under 6 cannot participate in this program. Adults (21+) are not permitted unless attending as a chaperone for children ages 6–12.

This year solar eclipse on April 8 was an extra special phenomenon, in part because it included New York City area, but mostly because I was able to experience it with my teen son at the American Museum of Natural History.

Note: While I paid for tickets into AMNH for this event, I sometimes work with the museum to highlight special programs. However any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.

The AMNH hosted a Solar Eclipse Day, which included getting a pair eclipse glasses, along with family-friendly educational activities.

While we missed the activities, we did get our eclipse glasses and joined other families on the Arthur Ross Terrace.


Being on Arthur Ross Terrace gave us a clear amazing view as we watched the moon eclipse the sun. Even at 90 percent coverage, it was truly one of those rare life experiences.

Made more rare when I heard my teen said this was "cool" and later that he enjoyed sharing that moment with me. A truly phenomenal day.

Hopefully my son can see the next total solar eclipse in 2044, when he's 35 y/o with his teen child!

While Solar Eclipse Day is over, the still has lots of Spring and Summer events families can enjoy, including upcoming EarthFest Celebration.

EarthFest Celebration

To commemorate Earth Month, the American Museum of Natural History's "EarthFest Celebration" will happen on Saturday, April 27 with a full day of family-friendly activities and performances celebrating our planet.

Free with Museum admission, EarthFest will include hands-on science and art activities, engagements with Museum scientists, and a “bioblitz,” where participants will join scientists in Central Park to discover the amazing variety of local insects.

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is an international marine research collaboration that explores Earth's history and dynamics. Learn about the real science that happens on the IODP ship through the pop-up science experiment “In Search of Earth’s Secrets.”

Our Earth’s Ecosystems

The Museum’s Science Visualization Group in collaboration with teams from Columbia University’s LEAP and Brown Institute have produced a smartphone-based augmented reality experience that will enable visitors in the Hall of Ocean Life to learn about the vital role that ocean ecosystems play in Earth’s climate system.

In addition to bringing some of the hall’s most beloved dioramas to life, the experience will demonstrate how animals help plants grow faster, slow the release of greenhouse gases, and store carbon in their bodies.

Microscopic Marvels: Exploring NYC's Urban Ecosystem (noon–3 pm)

Meet our tiny neighbors! Use a variety of microscopes to get a sparkling introduction to plankton swimming in NYC’s ponds and winged critters that glide on the breezes of our urban habitats.

Become Part of Nature with InHerBeauty (10 am–3 pm)

At this marine-themed station, attendees can immerse themselves in hair, makeup, and nail art, drawing inspiration from the vibrant hues and intricate patterns found in oceanic species.

EarthFest Myth-Busting Workshops From Climate Exchange and the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science

Engage with dynamic activities focused on climate science communication and improvisational theater. Using techniques from improv, role-playing, and other theater games, participate in hands-on exercises designed to foster understanding and action on climate issues.

The City Nature Challenge invites participants to document urban biodiversity through citizen science, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world thriving amidst bustling cityscapes. This year, EarthFest is joining Team NYC to showcase the richness of our local insect species, celebrating the biodiversity thriving just outside the Museum.

The exhibition "Grounded by Our Roots" opens April 3 in the Northwest Coast Hall’s at the American Museum of Natural History, and will showcase Indigenous artists who draw inspiration from their cultural traditions.

During a first look media preview, I meet with some of the Indigenous artists to learn about the stories behind their artwork and their individual creative Indigenous communities.

Each artist explained the materials, technique and cultural history behind their creative styles and how it applies to their specific artwork.

While each artist comes from a different Indigenous culture, they all want to honor their community, while bringing their artwork into a modern experience.

Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun Interview

I spoke with Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun about how he was able to blend ancient technique while using modern "supplies" for his artwork like Ancestors' Hands (2022): a cardboard sculpture made of a pizza box.

Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun: I'm a pretty new artist. I only learned in the last few years since when I began practicing. And for me, when I first started learning about Salish design, I tried to go back to the oldest cases, which are often in museum collections like here.

So I studied the forms of it, the shapes, the visual language and it really opened my eyes to how there's a continuity from thousands of years ago to today.

Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun: And then from there, As I started to immerse myself in it more, I found my own voice. I realized that it became a way to tell my own stories and to use my own voice.


Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun: And so I'm inspired by my ancestors, but I'm also inspired by modern art. I'm inspired by episode of Japanese anime. And, I do a lot of graphic design as well.

It's always trying to think about how I can apply the visual language in a new way. We aren't constrained by what people think indigenous art should be.

Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun: If people think we should be carving or we should be weaving, while we can absolutely do that, but we can do other things as well.

And I think it's really powerful and special for future generations to be seeing all the different ways that our art can be. So that's really one of the main motivates motivations for me.

Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun (Snuneymuxw First Nation), an interdisciplinary artist who aims to “share our art and our teachings, and ensure that future generations will have that knowledge accessible to them”

• Ancestors' Hands (2022): a cardboard sculpture made of a pizza box that is part of a series centered around an archaeological dig that took place in Snuneymuxw First Nation (Vancouver Island) in the 1980s
• We Fell From the Sky / Together and Apart (2022): mixed media on birch panel that tells one of the creation stories of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, whose ancestors fell from the sky onto Te’tuxwtun
• Through the Spindle / Other Whorlds (2021): a serigraph that explores the concept of the sulsultun (spindle whorl), a sacred source of knowledge within the Coast Salish world

Grounded by Our Roots Exhibit

The exhibition is produced with guest curator Aliya Boubard, the curator of the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art in Vancouver, who is Anishinaabe and a member of Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba.

The artists and works featured in the gallery include:


Nash’mene’ta’naht Atheana Picha (Kwantlen First Nation), whose work is “focused on learning traditional Coast Salish design language and studying Northwest Coast artwork with the introduction of different material practices”

• Split Serpent (2023): a serigraph on Stonehenge paper inspired by the artist’s effort to overcome a fear of snakes.
• Thunderbirds and Serpents (2022), a serigraph on Stonehenge paper whose design is a study in Coast Salish forms.
• Navigators (2022), a serigraph on Stonehenge paper, which the artist made after research into Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish printmakers.
• Thunderbird’s Visit (2023), a cedar carving that is a reflection of Coast Salish spindle whorls, which are recognized as the “teachers” of contemporary Coast Salish visual design.

Hawilkwalał Rebecca Baker-Grenier (Kwakiuł, Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh), a fashion designer who debuted her first collection at New York Fashion Week in 2022 and sees “fashion as a living practice that is rooted in our art form, laws, and worldview”

• Held by Generations (2023/2024): a vest and skirt made from dentalium shells, ermine, glass beads, leather, and cotton that merge ancestral materials and designs with contemporary style as an outward representation of the artist’s identity

SGidGang.Xaal Shoshannah Greene (Haida), who studied hand-drawn animation before switching to classical and contemporary Haida formline and “love(s) to explore and play between the worlds of classical formline and contemporary mediums”

• Shines Like Gold (2022): an archival pigment print on cotton rag that is inspired by Haida argillite plates. This piece refers to the story of Nang Kilslaas (also known as Raven), after he has successfully stolen the light that was concealed.
• Nang Kilslaas and The First Xaaydas (2023): an illustration on cotton archival watercolor paper that is one of several pieces from the project Our Guiding Ways of Being, a series of traditional and contemporary stories focused on Haida beliefs and values

Alison Bremner Naxhshagheit (Tlingit), who works in woodcarving, painting, digital collage, among other media, “exploring the present-day Tlingit experience, each concept ultimately dictating the medium”

• Midnight at the Fireworks Stand (2022): an acrylic painting made on vintage and found wallpaper focused on Indigenous communities that are heavily affected by generational trauma inflicted from Western contact
• Church and State (2024): an acrylic painting on canvas born of frustration with the Supreme Court’s authority to govern Indigenous matters

Northwest Coast Hall Renovation

The Museum’s Northwest Coast Hall reopened in 2022 following a transformative renovation and reinterpretation in consultation with Indigenous communities from the Pacific Northwest Coast. As part of the revitalization, a rotating art gallery was created to showcase the continuity and transformation of Indigenous creative traditions.

Featuring exhibits that showcase the creativity, scholarship, and history of the living cultures of the Pacific Northwest, the Northwest Coast Hall focuses on the material culture of 10 Native Nations and language communities of the Pacific Northwest and presents more than 1,000 restored cultural items, enlivened with new interpretation developed with Consulting Curators from the Coast Salish, Gitxsan, Haida, Haíłzaqv, Kwakwaka'wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth, Nuxalk, Tlingit, and Tsimshian communities.

The curator of the Northwest Coast Hall is Peter Whiteley, curator of North American Ethnology at the Museum, and the co-curator is Ḥaa’yuups, Nuu-chah-nulth scholar and cultural historian.

The Margaret Mead Festival at the American Museum of Natural History returns with an in-person celebration from Saturday, December 3, through Sunday, December 4.

This year’s Mead Festival— Mead 2022: Voices of the Pacific Northwest—is inspired by the opening of the Museum’s revitalized Northwest Coast Hall in May 2022.

The two-day festival will celebrate storytelling from the Indigenous Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast and focus on film, performance, and other media by Native artists.

Voices of the Native Northwest Coast

VR Experience: Unceded Territories

This first-come, first-served VR experience is included with general admission to the Museum and will be on view in the Grand Gallery on Saturday and Sunday.

Unceded Territories is a provocative VR experience that engages viewers in an interactive landscape that grapples with colonialism, climate change, and Indigenous civil rights.

Featuring the iconic artwork of Canadian First Nations artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun (Coast Salish and Okanagan descent), co-directed by Canadian filmmaker Paisley Smith, and with music from native Producer and DJ crew “The Halluci Nation,” Unceded Territories forces viewers to confront their role in the destruction of Indigenous land.

Mead Festival Sat, December 3 Film Program

On Saturday, the Mead Festival will feature 13 films created by and featuring members of Pacific Northwest Coast communities, selected by a group led by Mike Bourquin, a Tahltan/Gitxan multi-disciplinary filmmaker from the Iskut First Nation.

The program includes three sections: a slate of six animated shorts screening at 1 pm, a selection of six short films screening at 3:30 pm, and a full-length thriller in the Haida language (English subtitles) at 7 pm.

Each showcase will be followed by a Q&A session with filmmakers.

Saturday, December 3

1 pm: Cry Rock and Other Animated Films from the Pacific Northwest

A man is dragged to the underworld in the belly of a whale. A curious mink embarks on an ethereal escapade to find his true self. A salmon journeys from a polluted cityscape into the past.

In these six inventive and soulful animated shorts created by artists from the Pacific Northwest, watercolor, stop-motion, and illustration bring to life ancient myths and traditions, recording language and wisdom for generations to come.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with some of the filmmakers.

3:30 pm: Now is the Time and Other Short Films from the Northwest Coast

Bridging tradition and modernity, the films in this program cleverly and poignantly juxtapose legacies of Indigenous culture with radically contemporary style.

As outdated modes of ethnographic spectatorship are called into question, artists including Nicholas Galanin and Barb Cranmer forge new cinematic vocabularies to record their cultures, forcefully affirming the perseverance of Indigenous peoples’ futures.

Presentation followed by a Q&A session with some of the filmmakers.

7 pm Feature Film: SG̲aawaay Ḵʹuuna (Edge of the Knife) (2018)

Set in Haida Gwaii in the 19th century, the epic thriller SG?aawaay ?'uuna (Edge of the Knife) (2018) adapts a classic Haida folk tale of a man left for dead in the forest who becomes the Gaagiid/Gaagiixiid, or “the Wildman.”

The first feature film to be released entirely in the critically endangered Haida language, the film was made with a Haida cast, who trained with fluent speakers to build proficiency in the language for filming.

With sets, costumes, and props from traditional Haida craftspeople, Edge of the Knife is both visually engrossing cinema and socially minded catalyst for cultural revitalization. The film, which is directed by Helen Haig-Brown and Gwaii Edenshaw, will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Sunday, December 4

In this 30-minute, family-friendly performance, with a variety of carved masks, headdresses, drums, and rattles, the Git Hoan Dancers share legends and stories through song and dance while showcasing the magnificence and creativity of Tsimshian art.

Sharks, a new exhibition opening at the American Museum of Natural History this winter, will bring to life the incredible diversity of this ancient group of fishes.

The exhibit will also offer visitors a unique look at pre-historic and modern shark species, their habitats and hunting styles, and the conservation threats these magnificent animals are facing today.

Today, there are more than 500 species of sharks and more than 650 species of their close relatives—rays, skates, and chimaeras—inhabiting nearly all of the world’s aquatic environments, from coral reefs to the polar seas, and even freshwater rivers.

While the terrifying monster from the movie Jaws is what many might imagine when they think of sharks, today’s scientists are uncovering many surprising facts about this diverse group.

• Convinced that all sharks are carnivores? (Fact: Recent research shows that bonnethead sharks eat seagrass and can digest plants).
• Where do great white sharks give birth to their young? (Fact: By tracking females, scientists recently discovered a great white shark nursery off the coast of Long Island, New York).
• Can shark tourism be more profitable than shark fishing? (Fact: where fishing and ecotourism are regulated, tourism can support shark communities for generations. In fact, a single whale shark has been shown to bring thousands of more dollars as a beacon for tourism than could be earned by killing it).

Sharks addresses these exciting questions and reveals more secrets of the ocean’s top predators through life-sized models, touch-free interactives, real fossils, and more.

The exhibition will showcase fossils from the Museum’s extensive collections, current Museum research, and a spectacular “parade” of sharks highlighting the diversity of ancient and modern shark species through 30 lifelike models that range from 33 feet to 5 inches long, including the prehistoric megapredator megalodon, the “Tyrannosaurus rex of the seas,” which was so large it preyed on whales.

Other exhibition highlights include an interactive that challenges visitors to hunt like a hammerhead and touch-free media that reveals distinctive shark traits with the wave of a hand.

Sharks also delves into the serious conservation issues facing sharks today, including overfishing and habitat destruction, demonstrating that while these amazing animals pose few threats to people, we represent a serious danger to them.

Sharks will open to the public on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Museum Members will be able to preview the exhibition from Friday, December 10, through Sunday, December 12.

The upcoming "T. Rex: The Ultimate Predator" exhibit will introduce visitors to the entire tyrannosaur family and reveal the amazing story of the most iconic dinosaur in the world through fossils and casts, life-sized models, engaging interactives, and a virtual reality experience.

In collaboration with HTC VIVE, the Museum will present its first interactive, multi-player virtual reality experience. Visitors will team up to build a T. rex skeleton bone by bone and then watch as it comes to life in what is now Montana, as it was 66 million years ago.

The full tyrannosaur story includes dozens of different species and spans over 100 million years of evolution, with T. Rex appearing only at the very end of that period. Early species were small and fast, likely avoiding confrontations with larger dinosaurs.

So how did mega-predators like T. rex evolve from such humble origins? How did T. rex grow so quickly in adolescence, ballooning from the size of a chicken to the size of a truck in just 21 years? And what kind of super sensory skills and traits did it use to become such an efficient killer?

T. rex: The Ultimate Predator addresses these questions with life-sized reconstructions of tyrannosaurs at various life stages, large-scale video projections, and more.

Exhibit highlights include:

• Encounter a massive life-size model of a T. Rex with patches of feathers as well as reconstructions of a fluffy, helpless T. rex hatchling and a four-year-old juvenile T. rex.
• A “roar mixer” where visitors can imagine what T. rex might have sounded like by blending sounds from other animals. 
• A shadow theater where a floor projection of an adult T. rex skeleton will come to life.
• A magnetic wall where visitors will be tasked with placing various tyrannosaur family members in the correct time period. 
• They will also encounter a life-sized animation of T. Rex in the Cretaceous and explore real data from fossil specimens, CT scans, and microscope images at a tabletop Investigation Station.

T. rex: The Ultimate Predator will be open to the public starting Monday, March 11, 2019. Members will be able to preview the exhibition starting on Friday, March 8, through Sunday, March 10.

Admission to the Museum and the exhibition is $28 for adults, $22.50 for students and seniors, and $16.50 for children (ages 2–12).

When we received the invite to attend an event hosted by 20th Century Fox & the American Museum of Natural History, of course we said yes. In one event we got a chance to mix dinosaurs and science!

Our day started with a screening for Ice Age: Collision Course and meet and greet with astronaut Scrat. Being the 5th Ice Age movie, I wasn't sure if the movie would live up to our enjoyment of the last 4 movies. But it did and in a new and fresh way.

While the story-line of the Ice Age team trying to survive another disaster (again) has been done, they still make it thrilling (a meteor crashing into earth!). And funny (it all Scrat’s fault!). And educational (STEM lesson!)

Overall the movie will be enjoyed by both new and current Ice Age fans. So I suggest getting your tickets to see Ice Age: Collision Course in 3D.



After screening Ice Age: Collision Course, I had the chance to meet Neil deGrasse Tyson, American astrophysicist, who voiced Neil deBuck Weasel. Without giving to much away, I can say that deBuck offers some sciency feedback during one of Buck's conversations in his head.


During the meet and greet, I HAD to ask Neil...

"Is it possible that magnetized rocks can be launched into space to avoid a meteor hurling to earth disaster?!"

Cause come on, I need to know! Neil's answer?

Neil deGrasse Tyson: In short, yes it is possible that magnetized rocks launched into space can save us from meteor hurling to earth. But it would have to be very specific, since magnet can either attract or repel. As for how we'd get that magnetized rock into space....

Well that part still needs to be figured out. LOL

Besides talking about space rocks, Neil also shared about his character.


Neil deGrasse Tyson: I was impressed that actual Neil deBuck Weasel...I’m way chubbier than Neil deBuck Weasel....is a skinny weasel. I like when you have creative illustrators. They look to see what you’re like, and they get the essence of you, and they put it in the character.

This is what any good artist will do. It’s one thing to just draw what you look like, it’s another thing to have your manner, how you behave, how you move your arms and so. I think they looked at some of videos I’ve been in.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: So, when they animate the character, the character has some of my body gestures that I know that I have, So, it’s not just making him sort of look like me. It’s making him move and behave like me as well.

While we could have stayed and chatted with Neil deGrasse Tyson for the rest of the afternoon, we had to head over to the American Museum of Natural History for a special tour!


We started at the Dinosaurs Among Us exhibit. Of course my son and the kids love it here. If you read my post "Dinosaurs Among Us: Educational and Interactive Fun" then you know it's a great exhibit for families to check out.

After we hatched the kids. LOL. We went over to the Hayden Planetarium to see "Dark Universe", which was mind blowing.

We learned about the expanding universe, how scientist are using telescopes and space probes to map the universe and what is Dark matter. Bonus that The Space Show is narrated by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson

Being at the museum was a great way to tie in all we learned while watching Ice Age: Collision Course. What an amazing day!


SYNOPSIS:

The new exhibition "Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World" at the American Museum of Natural History features live species of crocs as well as fossils, life-sized models, and interactive stations.

During a media preview, I had a first look at the exhibition and was amazed. There's SO much to learn about modern crocodilians, a group that including crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials.


To learn more about the Crocs exhibition, I listen to a panel of "Croc" experts including

• Mark A. Norell, Chair and Macaulay Curator, Division of Paleontology

• Evon Hekkala, Research Associate, Department of Herpetology, American Museum of Natural History; and Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences, Fordham University

• George Amato, Director, Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics

The panel shared about

• The evolutionary history; crocodilians ancient relatives included galloping land predators, jumping insect-eaters, pug-nosed herbivores, and dolphin-like animals that hunted in the open sea.

• How the exhibition also covers how researchers are studying crocs in ways that may benefit humans including fighting antibiotic-resistant infections, tooth renewal, and blood substitutes.

• How crocodilians also lead intricate social lives, communicating with a range of sounds and subtle changes in body posture; battling over territories; engaging in lengthy courtship rituals; and providing their young with parental care.

After listening to the panel, I toured the Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World" exhibit. Here are a few things you can look forward to:


Live crocodiles visitors will encounter in this exhibition are

• The Siamese crocodile Among the most endangered crocodilian species; 
• The American alligator Females of this species are serious about motherhood, standing guard for two months until their babies hatch, then taking care of them for months or even years
• An African dwarf crocodile These crocs, unlike most crocodilians, do most of their hunting on land, prowling the forest at night, far from water.
• An African slender-snouted crocodile These highly aquatic crocs live in rivers and coastal waters surrounded by dense vegetation, often basking on logs overhanging water and leaping into the pool at the first sign of danger. Little is known about these secretive crocodiles in the wild.

The exhibition will also include life-sized dioramas featuring models of the Australian freshwater crocodile, Cuvier’s dwarf caiman, Indian gharial, and Estuarine (saltwater) crocodile.


Visitors will also be able to

• Test their strength against a croc in an interactive station.
• Learn how to speak “croc“.
• Get up close to a model of Gomek, the largest crocodile ever exhibited in the Western. Hemisphere after he was caught on the Fly River of Papua New Guinea in the 1960s.
• Test their crocodilian IQ with fun facts and croc trivia.

Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World, created by Peeling Productions at Clyde Peeling’s REPTILAND, opened on May 28, 2016, and will close on January 2, 2017.

This month the new Titanosaur dinosaur exhibit opened at the American Museum of Natural History, and I was able to get a sneak peek. Which wasn't hard since the Titanosaur is so large that it's head peek out since it can't fit fully into the gallery!

Matter of fact, the head of the Titanosaur is one of the first things you'll notice when you go to visit. Then you'll notice its 39-foot-long neck, which is part of the cast of this 122-foot-long dinosaur!


Paleontologists say that this dinosaur is a giant herbivore that belongs to a group known as Titanosaurs, which weighed in at around 70 tons—as much as 10 African elephants. This dino is so new that it hasn't even been formally named by the scientists who discovered it.


The massive cast, created over six months by Research Casting International in Ontario, Canada in association with the Argentina’s Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, is based on 84 fossil bones that were excavated in Argentine Patagonia in 2014.


In total, scientists have discovered 223 fossil bones from six individuals at the site. The finds included a colossal 8-foot femur, or thigh bone, whose unique shape and size indicated to scientists that they discovered a new species—and one of the biggest dinosaurs ever found. One femur found at the site will be among five original fossils on temporary view with the Titanosaur.

The story of this new animal and its dramatic discovery, which is a BBC Production with PBS and THIRTEEN Productions LLC, will be the focus of Nature: Raising the Dinosaur Giant airing Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at 8pm EST/7pm CST on PBS.

The unveiling of the Museum’s new dinosaur is part of a series of events, public programs, exhibitions, and digital offerings highlighting dramatic developments in paleontology.

This spring, the Museum presents the new exhibition Dinosaurs Among Us (on view from March 21, 2016, through January 2, 2017), which will examine how one group of dinosaurs evolved into the fascinating creatures we call birds.

Exploring topics ranging from flight to feathers, nests to wishbones, and brains to lungs, the exhibition will showcase remarkable new evidence for what scientists now call one of the best-documented evolutionary transitions in the history of life
