Opening in theaters April 22, DreamWorks Animation, action comedy THE BAD GUYS features a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws about to attempt their most challenging con yet—becoming model citizens.

I had the chance to advance screen The Bad Guys, along with interviewing the cast, which I'll share more about closer to the films release. For now I wanted to share these two video featurettes, which includes learning to draw with the cast and director of The Bad Guys.

Disney and Pixar’s TURNING RED has premiered exclusively on Disney+ and offers families a peek into what's it's like to juggle puberty, family obligations and getting tickets to your favorite boy band concert. All with humor and heart.

My Review

I was able to watch an advance screening of TURNING RED, and while I was prepared for the female puberty and mom conflicts, since I also went through something similar, the film touched me more about the theme of finding and accepting yourself.

For Mei Lee, this journey meant her coming to terms with turning into a Giant Red Panda, but for anyone watching the film, it's about the moments we all face while going through puberty. The moments that helps us decided the kind of person we want to be, while growing up. It's all about learning how to balance ourselves and our actions.

Mei Lee had to learn this lesson when dealing her mother, when dealing with her friends, when dealing with her at school bully, and when dealing with the person she wants to decide to be. Even while trying to figure out how to not turn into a Giant Red Panda.

While most of us aren't turning into Giant Red Panda, the struggle and joys of puberty is something adults will relate to and kids will get a humorous peek into. Puberty can be scary but also a magical moment in life. Watching Mei Lee helps families to see that.

To celebrate the release, I'm sharing these TURNING RED Fun Facts for families to enjoy.

TURNING RED Fun Facts

• POWER OF THE PALETTE – Each of the main characters has a distinct color palette: Mei is red, Miriam is yellow and green, Abby is lavender and Priya is ochre. The background characters at school don grayish blue-green clothing so that the main characters pop against the crowd.
• WINDBLOWN – When Mei goes from red panda back to 13-year-old girl, a small gust of wind accompanies the transformation. Filmmakers scaled Mei’s hair up to twice its actual length for just a few frames before it settles into its established length.
• BACK TO SCHOOL – Filmmakers had to build a middle school for the film, showcasing Mei’s friendships and new interests away from her mother’s watchful eye. Designed with 2 the film’s city setting in mind, artists actually found blueprints for the school director Domee Shi attended to use as inspiration for the layout of an urban school in Toronto.
• TIMELY – As filmmakers created the environments for the film, they looked for opportunities to reinforce the film’s early 2000s setting. There are wall-mounted telephones, old-school computers, CD players and handheld video games at Mei’s school. VHS tapes line the shelves in the Lee household.
• DINNER BELL – In the film, Jin’s delicious dinner is inspired by Taishanese cuisine, including abalone with snow peas, steamed chicken, steamed fish and eel rice.
• ITALIAN IMPORT – Artists borrowed the model of Massimo’s cat Machiavelli from “Luca” to create the temple cats that frequent the Lee family temple. The fur is a little longer and the coloring is different to distinguish the difference, but if you look closely you can see the resemblance.
• MAJOR DRAMA – In the film, Mei and Ming watch a show called “Jade Palace Diaries.” The “Turning Red” production team actually created a two-page script for the drama that unfolds, but only a few shots can be seen on the Lees’ TV. The TV logo is in the shape of the dumpling boy from Pixar’s 2018 Oscar®-winning short “Bao,” and features director Domee Shi’s last name as the channel name.

SYNOPSIS

Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager.

And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!

Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.

In international markets where Disney+ is not yet available, the film will be released theatrically, with premiere dates to be announced.

The Gayo Azul Cotija, available exclusively in wedge form, is a Mexican-style aged, fresh cow's milk cheese named after Cotija, Mexico. Cotija cheese is a great topping for enhancing any dish since it has a sharp, slightly salty flavored with a firm, crumbly texture.

Song of the North, an epic Persian story told through shadow puppetry, projected animation and more, had it's US premiere at BAM's Harvey Theater stage, and we had the chance to see the first show, along with meeting creator and director Hamid Rahmanian.

The show itself is an amazing mix of shadow puppetry, animation and musical storytelling. We loved it and highly recommend to families who enjoy live theater or want to experience something different.

Song of the North offers a visual experience that keeps you engaged and excited to see what's next. From watching a hero going on an adventure, to seeing how a princess charms using her voice, to a battle with a large scale monster, it's all told on screen? or better behind screen in an engaging way.

Apart from the visual, there's the culture and historical aspects of the show. Just in time for Persian (Iranian) New Year (Sunday, March 20), you will learn a bit about Persian history and folklore through the storytelling and personalities of the historic men and women portrayed. Which is a nice exposure for families.

Overall Song of the North offers a lot from cinematic theater performance to raising culture awareness.

Can you share why you use puppets to tell the story of Song of the North?

Hamid: Puppets are very expressive and can inspire imagination. They connect with all age groups. The art form is also unique, ethereal, and magical. I really like playing in that realm. It's satisfying to watch 2D forms come to life so that the audience forgets they are watching puppets and becomes immersed in the story.

Why do you think the storyline is relatable to all cultures?

Hamid: The story is universal. The themes of ego, the naivety of youth, the complications of life, and forgiveness are all universal. Everyone can relate to the struggles that the characters go through and how they all grow as a result of their adventure. The story may take place in certain geography but they are timeless and relatable.

What's your favorite childhood memory of celebrating Persian (Iranian) New Year?

Hamid: Getting together with family, the house full of people. I remember eating from the overflowing bowls of sweets and candies, the delicious meals, and especially receiving brand new, crisp bills (money) as gifts from our elders.

How can US families honor and celebrate Persian (Iranian) New Year?

Hamid: Spring is a time of renewal. Do some spring cleaning, visit family members, definitely eat some fish and herbed rice (it’s a tradition for every Nowruz), and buy some fresh Spring flowers like hyacinths to make your house smell good.

Over 400 handmade puppets are used to tell the story of Manijeh, a courageous heroine who uses her strengths and determination to rescue her beloved and help prevent a war. Adapted from the Book of Kings (Shahnameh), a historical and cultural touchstone that is a national treasure in Iran, Song of the North challenges the Eurocentric worldview of art and storytelling.

The multi-disciplinary show is created, designed, and directed by Hamid Rahmanian, a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship-winning filmmaker/visual artist. Song of the North tells the story of Manijeh, a heroine from ancient Persia, who uses her strengths and talents to reconcile Iran and Turan's warring kingdoms and rescue her beloved Bijan from a perilous predicament of her own making.

It will be the first puppet theater production to be presented on BAM's Harvey Theater stage. The production runs March 5 at 2pm and March 12 at 2pm and 7pm.

National Day of Unplugging provides a great reason for us to connect with people in personal ways, engage in non-tech activities, and try new tech-habits that we can use long-term to support our tech-life balance.

Here are five easy ways to disconnect on the National Day of Unplugging, from digital wellness expert Taino Bendz.

• Manage Device Notifications. Which notifications do you really need? Turn the rest off! So simple, yet so powerful to take control of your attention.
• Take the Day Off Social Media. Let friends & family know in advance how to reach you. Replace your freed-up time with activities that you enjoy.
• Have a Device-Free Evening. Read a book, play games, cook a nice meal, exercise.
• Reflect and Talk to Someone About Technology. What are the positive sides? What are the negative? What would you like to change?
• Consider Your News Diet. With everything going on in the world it can be important to stay on top of the news, but it also takes a toll on our mental health if we do it constantly. Decide how often you want to get news updates. Think about what you do with the information received. “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” is the newest adventure in the Wizarding World™ created by J.K. Rowling.

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world.

Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers.

But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?
