While the physical labor of motherhood (the laundry, the cooking, the driving) is visible, the mental labor is not. The Invisible Load is all the managing, planning, and constant tracking of the family needs, schedules, and emotional well-being.

It’s being "CEO" of the household, but never getting to actually clocks out.

When we head into May, this load doubles. There are end-of-year concerts, teacher gifts, summer camp registrations, and the pressure to make Mother’s Day "perfect."

But at time this invisible load can become too heavy, so we have to set boundaries.

3 Ways to Lighten the Invisible Load

The "Fair Play" Audit

Sit down for twenty minutes and list the things that are currently living in your head. Is it the summer wardrobe transition? The pet’s vet appointment? The meal planning?

Once it’s on paper, it’s no longer invisible. Pick two items on that list and explicitly hand them off. "Handing off" doesn't mean asking for help; it means giving the other person total ownership from start to finish.

The Power of the "Strategic No"

May is the month of the "Ask." School committees, neighborhood potlucks, and family get-togethers.

Before you say "yes," ask yourself: Does this add joy, or does it just add to my list? It is okay to be the mom who doesn't participate in the optional bake sale this year.

A "no" to an outside request is a "yes" to your own peace of mind.

Define Your "After-Hours"

Establish a time when the "Mom CEO" desk is closed. Whether it’s 8:00 PM or right after dinner, let the family know that non-emergency requests (like "where are my soccer cleats?") need to wait until morning.

Guarding that time for your own rest is essential for your mental health.

My Counter Ball Review

Since we were excited to get outside, we tried out the Counter Ball first. It comes with everything you need including batteries, instructions to use a bung plug for wet conditions, and even a tape measure so you know when the ball needs to be inflated again to correct size.

After a 3 second press our Counter Ball was ready for outside activity. My son tried the ball out with different methods including soccer, volley ball and just passing it back and forth with me.

The Counter Ball encouraged us verbally while keeping the count. It was really a useful feature and we spent a good amount of time trying to increase the number count with each activity.

Hypnotic projections play in sync with the performers as they send juggling balls soaring, conjure confidence atop a tower of chairs, and fling their glowing diabolos to the heavens in hopeful arcs of neon.

Set to a dramatic medley of traditional Japanese drumming and thumping electronica, YOAH features imagery from myths and traditions of Shinto, the native religion that still plays an important role in modern Japanese culture.

Historic Philadelphia, Inc. The lanterns blend the magic of Chinese tradition with the spirit of global connection and friendly competition, along with themes of animals and flowers.

In addition to the stunning lantern displays, guests can enjoy live cultural stage performances, a choreographed fountain light show at the historic Rendell Family Fountain, as well as food and drink offerings such as Asian cuisine, American comfort food, and signature cocktails in the Cocktail Garden.

The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival Student Design Contest

Giving area students the opportunity to design a lantern for the 2026 Festival, children ages 8-14 are invited to submit a drawing of a horse to celebrate the Year of the Horse. Winning drawings will be crafted into lanterns and displayed during the Festival.

The students will be able to take the lantern home with them at the conclusion of the Festival. Deadline for submission is May 8, 2026.

An Evening in Franklin Square fundraiser and private Festival preview

Taking place on Tuesday, June 2 at 6 pm, allows attendees a sneak peek of the Festival before it opens to the public. This illuminating evening includes a silent auction, the Parx Square Derby carousel race, dinner, and dessert and dancing among the lanterns throughout the Square.

All proceeds from An Evening in Franklin Square benefit the operation, management, and free community programs in Franklin Square.
