LifeLock The Smart Talk Helps Teach Good Online Habits

Like many kids of his generation, my son is growing up using technology. But as he's gotten older, I've started wondering about internet safety. How and when should I teach him online safety rules?

Note: Thanks to LifeLock for sponsoring this post. I'm a member of KidzVuz blogger network. However any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.

To be honest I've been putting it off. But after learning about LifeLock The Smart Talk Giveaway for a chance to win a trip for four to Disney World, I had the motivation to do it!

So I start a discussion with my son about us planning healthy digital limits together. It's a talk we've started before, but this time I explained we're putting all the things we talk about into a personalized family agreement.

While it seemed like really big task, we were able to do it step by step thanks to The Smart Talk – a free, digital toolkit that gives families a road map to set collaborative ground rules that help strike a healthier relationship with technology, created by LifeLock and the National PTA.

The Smart Talk website is really easy to use.

We were able to chose which options for which ground rules we wanted to focus on. I thought this was a great idea since parents can customize rules to fit their children technology usage. While I allow my son to use technology to play with apps, watch videos and take photos, he's not allowed on social media or to make phone calls.

Once I picked our customized rules, then we were able to go through and discuss permissions and devices options. We clearly established what my son can use his devices for and that I'm allowed to set limitations on time usage, etc.

Once we agreed on the points, then everything was put together nicely into an official family agreement, which could be stored on the computer or printed and posted at home. One great thing about the The Smart Talk agreement is that you can always go back to edit and update different points as your child grows or their technology usage changes.

After printing out our The Smart Talk agreement, we both signed that we'd follow the rules as discussed. It felt so official and both my son and I felt we had taken an important step together. I'm so glad that the LifeLock The Smart Talk made it so easy for us!
