Disney’s Queen Of Katwe: A Mother's Hope & Opportunity video clip #QueenOfKatwe
When I first say the "Opportunity" video clip for Disney’s QUEEN OF KATWE, I was so touched by it. As a mother currently struggling with my son's independence, I understood the choice faced by Harriet (Lupita Nyong’o), who was being asked to let go of her children so they could take a new journey in life.
Let me tell you, under normal circumstances letting a child do something outside your power and control as parent is hard. There is no way to explain how hard it is. As parents we want to protect and keep our kids safe.
But sometimes our kids lives take them down paths that are outside our safety net. Then we have to choose. Do we limit our kids or let them go so they can grow and became something more then we dreamed.
In the "Opportunity" video clip Harriet (Lupita Nyong’o) makes the choice to let Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) and her brother make different life choices. Choices that take them away from home and into a whole new world. Living life in the streets of rural Uganda can't be easy.
I can only guess that the hope of something better for her children is what tipped the scales for Harriet. And is it this hope from her mother that allows Phiona to change her life and the life of her family.
When speaking about Harriet, Lupita Nyong’o shared
“The story has a lot to do with the power of dreams. Robert believes that dreams are what can manifest a life well lived, while for Harriet, dreaming is dangerous because it fills you with expectations that life may not be able to meet.
For her, it is a tug of war between love and fear: to love is to fear for those you love. But then she realizes that it is her fear that is holding her child back and she has to learn to let go of it."
