Sesame Street Debuts Grover’s Number Special iPhone App

Like most adults I grew up watching Sesame Street and laughing at the funny things the monsters did. One of my favorite monsters is the lovable and helpful Grove. My mom and I would laugh so much during his "waiter" segment. Grover just couldn't get the orders right. LOL

Now you can enjoy watching Grover since iPhone and iPod touch users can share in his zaniness with a new app available from the App Store. Sesame Workshop, the producers behind Sesame Street, and IDEO, an award-winning design and innovation consultancy, today announced the availability of the Grover’s Number Special App. This is the first official Sesame Street app for the iPhone and iPod touch.

When Charlie, the cook, doesn’t come into the restaurant and the customer wants his lunch right away, Grover, our cute and lovable waiter, needs help! Join Grover in the kitchen to catch—and count—ingredients to make delicious and nutritious meals. All users have to do is tip the iPhone or iPod touch back and forth to move the tray. Grover tells you how many ingredients to catch, and then counts the items with you.

The Grover’s Number Special App includes original Sesame Street video and encourages visual discrimination, counting, and number recognition. The Grover’s Number Special App is available for $2.99 from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at

Stop & Shop Tips to Simplify Holidays

During the holidays don't you wish that we could find everything needed in one place. Cutting down on all the running would help so much wouldn't it? Recently I attend a luncheon held by Stop & Shop with for mom bloggers to share tips on how we can simplify and save money during this holiday season.

Before we sat down to have lunch the moms did a little arts and crafts with supplies found at Stop & Shop stores.

There were 3 tables all with different activities. At the 1st table you could make chocolate covered pretzels, the 2nd table make a "snack" in a bottle and at the 3rd table a flower center piece. I was at the 3rd table. I'm pretty proud how my flower center piece came out.

After making our items we sat down to lunch while listing to a presentation from Stop & Shop that included these helpful holiday tips
  • Try to wrap as you buy so you don't have to gift wrap 'til all hours.
  • Buy store made desserts and "spice them up" with shipped cream and sprinkle of cinnamon
  • Visit stores right after the holidays when you can get next year items for 75% or more off.
  • Save by buying the big packs of meat early and freezing half so it's on hand throughout the holiday season.
  • Stay organized by planning ahead. Divide your shopping list into "anytime" and "buy later" categories. For fresh fruit or cheese platters, wait close to Thanksgiving Day.
  • Check the store circular for weekly specials use coupons and store loyalty card to save more. Stop & Shop loyalty card gives big holiday rewards
But to me the most important tip is:
  • Stop and remind yourself that your living your children's memories. When your kids think of the holidays what do you want them to remember? Certainly not that you were freaking out =)
That of course is easier said then done during this time when you want to make the holiday "special" for your family. Well Stop and Shop can help in that area also. Did you know that Stop and Shop has holiday dinners? You can order a complete meal for your family, for a couple or just "meal extras" to help out your holiday dinner. I'm definitely happy to know that Stop and Shop is willing to help me save time and money this holiday season.

As a mother the health of our children is always a first concern. But if illness happens we want to know there's treatment for our child. But for some children some types of treatment are over 20 years old without any new research being done. One of those areas that needes updated research is pediatric cancer.

Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 18 in the U.S., killing more children than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined. The mission of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is to bring awareness to this issue and make it a national priority.

I recently hung out with a Glad representive to learn more about how those interesed can help support Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. The Glad Products Company and Cookies for Kids’ Cancer took over NYC’s first mobile bakery, The Cupcake Stop and turned it into The Cookie Stop. Hitting hotspots such as Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and Grand Central Station they sold cookies and spread their message.

I learned that the maker of Glad food storage solutions has partnered with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer and during November and December, Glad will match all donations raised by the charity up to $100,000.

AdoptUsKids and National Adoption Month 2009

November is National Adoption Month. For my part I'd like to help spread the word about AdoptUsKids who understand the importance and benefits of adoption from foster care.

The mission of AdoptUsKids is to recruit and connect foster and adoptive families with waiting children throughout the United States. Funded by the Children’s Bureau of the Administration for Children and Families, the national photolisting website contains photos and information about children in foster care.

A national adoption public service advertising recruitment campaign was launched in July 2004 in a partnership of the Children’s Bureau, the Ad Council, and AdoptUsKids, with the goal of raising awareness of the significant number of children in this country waiting to be adopted.

New PSAs have been developed as an extension of this highly successful campaign. The latest series of ads in this award-winning campaign target the African American community, in keeping with the effort to diligently recruit from communities representative of the children in care.

Thirty-one percent of the children in foster care waiting to be adopted are African American; African American children are overrepresented in the foster care population relative to their percentage in the U.S. general population. Because of this, African American children often wait longer to be adopted.

You can learn more about adoption from foster care and how to help spread the word about children in care waiting for a forever family. You can also search for children in your area.

You can also follow @perfectparent ( or and become a fan of AdoptUsKids on Facebook at

Bruce Smith Animating Disney's Princess & The Frog

Despite having tons of fun at Disney World I did get some "work" in. LOL. During the Illuminations Dessert Party I took time out from eating yummy cookies and other goodies to interview Bruce Smith, supervising animator on Disney's The Princess And The Frog film.

l-r: Lashanda (Sista Sense), Me, Bruce Smith, Tara (YoungMommyLife)

So, Bruce is the Supervising Animator on Dr. Facilier, the Villain at the center of "The Princess and the Frog", but as you can hear in our interview he's very aware of adding the diversity factor in films. How exciting that he's working on the major Disney feature of a African American Princess!

Sorry that we didn't talk alot about Dr. Facilier during my interview. To make it up to you I found another interview where Bruce really does talk about creating Dr. Facilier.

I loved interviewing Bruce because...yup, he's a black man in a great position at a major brand company. Gotta love that positive male role model example. Bruce was so humble and easy talk with despite the facts that he's pretty awesome. Have you read his Biography? Woah.

Bruce Smith is among the animation industry’s leading designer-directors. Smith created the hit Disney Channel series "The Proud Family" and co-created The Cartoon Network’s urban sci-fi series "Da Boom Crew." Together with Hyperion Pictues, Smith founded Jambalaya Studio.

Smith said "the name Jambalaya was chosen because it sounds unpredictable and musical, and the word itself actually means ‘a mixture of diverse elements.’" Jambalaya’s first production is the hit Disney Channel series “The Proud Family,” an animated sitcom Smith created about a middle-class African-American family.

Now I didn't get a chance to talk to Bruce about The Proud Family since I got distracted by a glass of wine BUT I swear that The Proud Family had some multiethnic in there. Have you see the mom? and didn't Penny have a biracial friend or something?!

Anyway, knowing a little bit about the animator(s) behind "The Princess and the Frog" really helps understand the thinking and dediciation that went into making this movie step by step. I can't wait to see it!

Special thanks to Bruce Smith for talking to this crazy chick and giving the interview and to Disney for the yummy treats that night ;)

A Black Buddhist at Disney World

Peace and quiet. As a new mom having moments of peace and quiet is so rare that we learn to go on without it. But having these types of moments are key for someone following the buddhist path. Besides a quick 15 min sit in the morning, I've had no time to mediate or just breathe. So imagine my dilemma when I found myself away from home and child with time, peace and quiet. I didn't know what to do

But being in Disney's' Animal Kingdom Lodge, where all I hear is the sounds of nature quickly reminded me how nice peace and quiet can be. I started just sitting outside my rooms balcony and breathing. I'd look out and see the wildlife sharing the moment with me. It's amazing. Anyone from the buddhist community would love staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. There's so much powerful and harmonies energy swirling thru that place.

Standing over 6 stories tall, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge includes 762 rooms, authentic African-inspired architecture and the kraal African-village landscape design—a semi-circle design popular in Africa which offers expansive views of the surrounding savanna and its many animal inhabitants. Thatched ceilings, large beams, a woven ceiling, hand-carved golden-tone furnishings, real African artifacts and a vast mud fireplace in the main lobby surround you in the inimitable spirit of Africa.

Another place perfect for a buddhist looking to enjoy Disney world without all the hustle and bustle is Disney's Treehouse Villas. Built new from the ground up but inspired by the old treehouse villas on the same spot, the new structures have three bedrooms, full kitchens and large raised terraces. Their unique octagonal shapes provide views in several directions.

The Treehouse Villas are located within a woods like setting. There's enough space between the villas for privacy and peace and quiet. From the outside it's rusty, cozy and cabin like. The villas are elevated 10 feet off the ground on pedestals and beams designed to blend into the forest environment

But once you get inside you see it's just as modern like the other resorts. All 60 three-bedroom vacation homes sleep nine and offer modern luxuries such as partial cathedral ceilings, a barbecue grill and flat-panel TVs, all presented in a style dubbed "cabin casual". I fell more and more in love with this place and was very sad to end my tour. I had visions of Daniel and I enjoying a family vacation there.

Good to Know About Treehouse Villas:
  • Disney's Magical Express is a complimentary service that transports you and your luggage to the hotel.
  • Kid's Nite Out, a private company, provides in-room babysitting or fun, trained mother/father helpers to spend time with your family; call 407-828-0920 to arrange in advance.
Fun Facts
  • Environmental sensitivity was extremely important to Disney Imagineers when constructing the new treehouse villas. As a result, 5,178 tons, or 65.22 percent, of materials from demolition were recycled, including concrete and metals.
  • When it comes to wiring, Disney Imagineers working on the treehouse villas went to great "lengths" to ensure every vacation home runs smoothly. Consequently, there are 87,858 lineal feet, or 16.6 miles, of wire for fiber optics, copper, telephones and CATV.
  • To reduce the footprint of each villa, the team used modular construction to create the stand-alone structures.

Single Parents Plan a Disney World Trip

As I toured around with the other Magical Mocha Moms, I wondered how to plan a return trip to Disney World as a single parent. I soon started questioning Darcie and Heather, the two members of the WDW Moms Panel traveling with us. While these ladies are knowledgeable as married moms planning a trip, I really wanted input from another single parent who's toured Disney.

Laura Spencer became the magical fairy who grants wishes and later connected me with Joanne and Brigitta, two single moms who've been on the panel and know all the cool ins and outs of planning a trip. They had alot of great tips and comment in reply to my questions.

  1. So, how can a single parent plan to visit Disney? What are some sites they can use, call, visit?

Joanne: At first glance, planning a Disney vacation can be overwhelming with its four theme parks, two water parks, numerous resorts and other activities. The web is a great way to learn about Disney free of charge! The first stop would be the Disney World website, which has fabulous photos and descriptions of resorts and theme parks, prices and more. The Disney World Moms Panel website is another great place to start.

There are many discussion boards and websites that provide excellent information. The DisBoards is my favourite discussion board to get great advice from true Disney fans. AllEars is another site that I look to often, especially when deciding between resorts and restaurants. And be sure to check out the Mousesavers site if you’re looking for the latest specials.

Brigitta: I like to book all of my own travel and usually I find a cheap flight first (having flexible dates here are a definite bonus). Next, I look into the "Value Resorts" at WDW (if on a budget) based on my flight dates (also if looking for a deal).

Most of the time, if your dates are flexible, you can save quite a lot of money this way. WDW does offer quite frequently special deals (with a code that can be found on the WDW website under "Special Offers"). For single parents with more than one child (based on their ages of course) there may be additional charges per person/per night for the Resort room.

There are so many options available adequate for all age groups, I would recommend is The Walt Disney World Moms Panel. All Ears.Net is another website that I use frequently. There are many great tips available also regarding appropriate attractions/rides to visit based on many factors such as age, height, etc.

  1. Where are some hotels, restaurants, attraction, etc that are single family friendly.

Joanne: One of the great things about Walt Disney World is there truly is something for everyone. There are three categories of Disney resorts, value, moderate and deluxe, each with several resorts to choose from. Staying at a Disney resort provides many cost-saving perks, including the Magical Express, which whisks guests from Orlando International Airport to their resorts. No need to wait for your bags, they pick those up for you too!

All Star Music is my daughters favourite. In addition to being fantastic value, which I love, they offer fun activities throughout the day, and show a pool-side movie every night. These activities are great for her to meet other kids from around the world. And the best part, it’s all included in our low room rate!

The restaurants at Disney vary from casual to formal, and whichever you choose, children are welcome and catered to. There is also so much to do other than go to a theme park. We now try to factor in one day to stay at the resort and enjoy the pools and more. Downtown Disney and the Disney’s Boardwalk are fabulous spots to visit, and we can spend hours just strolling through the shops and enjoying the sites.

One of my favourite Disney perks is transportation. There is no need to rent a car. Buses shuttle you from your resort to theme and water parks, Downtown Disney, basically anywhere on Disney property. I always find we meet so many great people on the bus. You never know who you’ll meet, and what great Disney tip they’ll share on your way to the Magic Kingdom!

Brigitta: I suggest to visit Walt Disney World and search the dates suitable for your trip and prices based on those dates, go to Disney World Moms and/or AllEars for additional answers to questions you may have about attractions, dining experiences (characters available at the different dining experiences), how to spend your time wisely without getting frazzled (WDW is a very large area and can be intimidating for single parents travelling with their children who may get "burnt out" fairly quickly).

Many times I will also call WDW at (407) 939-7675 If I need a bit more information that I feel only a cast member can help me with or if you have certain "requests" which would need to be made directly with a cast member in reservations and cannot be done online (medicinal needs, floor level requests and specific locations, etc.) Bottomline for anyone I believe is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK! it really does help to make a magical and stressfree vacation to WDW possible, even on a budget.

Protecting Yourself and Baby During Flu Season

As a mom-to-be or a mother of young children, you have much more to worry about than just yourself this flu season, particularly with the added threat of the novel H1N1 flu ("swine flu") virus. Pregnant women are among the groups more susceptible to complications from both seasonal flu and the novel H1N1 flu—-two influenza viruses you need to know about this flu season.

Protect Yourself, Protect Your Baby
  • It’s safe to have an injectable flu vaccine, made with an inactive form of the virus, any time during your pregnancy or while you’re breastfeeding.
  • Numerous studies find no harmful effects in children or adults from the preservative called thimerosal, a mercury compound used for more than 80 years to preserve vaccines. If you’re worried about vaccine safety, thimerosal-free vaccines are now available so ask your health care provider about your options.
  • If you are pregnant and have flu symptoms—contact your healthcare professional right away. For more information about flu aand pregnancy, visit

Every day experts are studying the virus, so the best thing you can do to stay healthy is to stay informed. Here’s the latest:
  • Get vaccinated against seasonal flu. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends seasonal flu vaccines for all pregnant women, no matter where they are in their pregnancies. The injectable flu vaccine, made with an inactive form of the virus, is safe for pregnant women in all three trimesters. Seasonal flu vaccine is also safe for children ages six months old and older.
  • Get vaccinated against H1N1flu when the vaccine becomes available. Medical experts suspect that the H1N1 flu will pose the same risks for pregnant women as the seasonal flu does—premature labor and pneumonia are possible complications, so it’s important to get the vaccine when it’s available to adults. Experts expect the H1N1 vaccine will offer immune protection in one dose. The H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in October.
  • Practice flu-prevention hygiene.Wash your hands as often as possible with soap and water; wipe down keyboards and doorknobs with antimicrobial wipes or cleansers; cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and stay home if you are sick.
  • Boost your immunity naturally. The very best thing you can do to protect against H1N1 flu is to get vaccinated. But you can also boost your immunity naturally by eating a balanced diet packed with fruits and vegetables and get plenty of rest.
  • Be on the lookout for flu symptoms. Both seasonal flu and novel H1N1 flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people also experience vomiting and diarrhea, especially with H1N1 flu. If you start to experience any of these symptoms or think you may have been exposed to H1N1 flu, call your health care professional immediately for guidance.
  • Talk to your doctor. Have a conversation with your health care professional about additional steps you can take to protect yourself, your baby and the rest of your family against H1N1 flu. Don’t hesitate to call him or her with questions as they arise
