After a defeat in a battle of strength, Cozy is convinced he’ll never impress radiant Lofti. But while he is sulking, he learns of a bigger concern—his friend Bella the beluga whale is about to get trapped in fast forming ice.

Cozy races to the inlet where Bella is in trouble. Luckily, he thinks of a new way to use his strong legs and tough horns to help save her. Cozy, the lovable musk ox, shows how helping your friends is always the right thing to do— no matter who is watching.

Brett’s art is inspired by expeditions to Alaska where she encountered musk oxen in the Matanuska Valley, horned puffins playing at a waterfall on Fox Island in Resurrection Bay, and a charming pod of beluga whales carrying seaweed on their heads in Turnagain Arm.

Q&A: COZY IN LOVE

During the pandemic, COZY, your musk ox character debuted and became an instant hit. Why do you think that is?

Jan Brett: I researched and wrote the book long before the pandemic, however, I think it touched a chord because people were looking for comfort and warmth in their lives during difficult times.

In the original Cozy, the animals find refuge from winter’s chill under the musk ox’s fur and everyone must try to get along. It seemed fitting in 2020 when so many of us were homebound.

You based COZY IN LOVE on the classic folktale, The Crow and the Pitcher. What gave you this idea?

Jan Brett: In Aesop’s fable, a thirsty crow finds a pitcher with a little water in it. Not able to reach the water, the crow drops pebbles down the narrow neck until the water level is high enough for him to drink. I love the science of it and imagined clever Cozy could rescue his whale friend in a similar way on a much larger Alaskan scale.

What Alaskan animal encounters did you capture in the story?

Jan Brett: At the musk ox farm in Alaska’s Matanuska Valley, I observed musk ox bulls butting horns with great drama, while cows frolicked as if their silky coast were couture.

It seemed like love was in the air when they coyly lowered their long eyelashes as they admired their pasture princes.

During a stay on Fox Island in Resurrection Bay, I saw many bird and animal species up close for the first time, including elegant horned puffins playing in a waterfall.
