Griot Tale Saturdays & June Events in Franklin Square

Franklin Square, the public space in Old City managed and operated by Historic Philadelphia, Inc., has special events during the month of June, in addition to Center City’s only full size Mini Golf and Carousel.

Highlights of Special Events for June in Franklin Square include:

  • Free Yoga in the Square
  • Free Storytime and Story Walks in English and Mandarin
  • Griot Tale Saturdays with the African American Museum in Philadelphia
  • Franklin Square Fountain Show – day and night!

Griot Tale Saturdays
Saturdays, June 19, June 26, July 24, August 28

The African American Museum in Philadelphia is partnering with Franklin Square to bring Griot Tale Saturdays to the Square all summer long. A griot is an African oral historian that passes on their culture through the practice of storytelling. Perfect for families and FREE.

Griot Tale Saturday: Juneteenth Edition
June 19: 12 - 3 pm
In-person event, FREE

Listen and learn through reenactor portrayals of U.S. Colored Troops, many of the soldiers who delivered word of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation across Texas in 1865. Explore the connections between freedom and liberty, to commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth.

Griot Tale Saturday: Storytelling by Keepers of the Culture: Freedom – Liberty
June 26: 1 - 2 pm
In-person event, FREE.

Join Keepers of the Culture (KOTC) for this Griot Tale Saturday exploring the connections between freedom and liberty, to commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth and Independence Day. Keepers of the Culture, Inc. of Philadelphia is an educational, cultural art organization that seeks to perpetuate the African and African American oral tradition.

Chinatown Scavenger Hunt - Summer Edition
Through July 3, 2021

Take in all that Chinatown has to offer in this free activity that is open to all ages. This open-air event guides hunters through the history and vibrancy of Chinatown as not only a foodie destination, but also as one of culture and community. Register to participate in the scavenger hunt by visiting the Franklin Square Ticket Window during regular operating hours. FREE.

Yoga in the Square
Wednesdays 5:30 pm, Sundays 11 am

Take a Book, Return A Book! Franklin Square’s official Little Free Library is part of the nation’s largest book sharing movement. We encourage any person of any age to come take a book to read and replace it with a book that you have already read.

Franklin Square Fountain Show
Through October 31, with daily performances every 30 minutes from 12 pm until closing.

In 2019, the 181-year-old historic fountain was renovated to dazzle, while being enhanced with a choreographed water spectacular with lights. Fountain jets dance magically with dramatic lighting and music as LED lights glisten for visitors.

Guests visiting the park day or night can enjoy choreographed “performances,” that showcase the historic infrastructure of the fountain. Each performance is a selection of one of six songs. FREE.

Year-Round Attractions in Franklin Square

  • Philly Mini Golf - presented by IBEW Local 98: Putt around the city on this Philadelphia-themed miniature golf course. $10 adults/$8 children (3-12), FREE for children under 2.
  • Parx Liberty Carousel - A zebra, a lion, an eagle, horses and more! Hop on this spectacular all-American style carousel with hometown racehorse heroes Afleet Alex and Smarty Jones. $3 per person (adult or child), FREE for children under 2
  • Playgrounds - Slides, swings, and spinners…bring the kids and enjoy two playgrounds! Open year-round and free.
  • SquareBurger - Daily, 12 - 8 pm – SquareBurger, operated by Cooperage, has a delicious menu which includes burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, cheesesteak, chicken tenders, panini Caprese, jumbo pretzels, waffle fries, nachos, as well as ice cream and milkshakes. The legendary Original Cake Shake made with Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets®, will continue to be a highlight.
