My Spy Movie 'Behind-the-Scenes' Chloe Coleman Interview

By 6/25/2020 01:35:00 PM ,

This week I joined a round-table interview with Chloe Coleman to learn more about her role as Sophie in My Spy, being released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on June 26th.

Note: This posted was written in partnership with Amazon Studios for My Spy home release. However, any personal views expressed are always 100% my own

While Chloe is a fun and sweet person to interview, she also showed amazing emotional and social maturity when she shared about the spy skills she learned, working with Dave Bautista and how the Black Lives Matter affects her.

In the "My Spy" film Chloe Coleman character Sophie is a tech savvy and street smarts girl, who find JJ’s (Dave Bautista) undercover hideout near the apartment she shares with her mother. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover, Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy.

Of course I had to ask Chloe about learn new cool skills....

What cool skill did you learn while filming "My Spy"

Chloe Coleman: My Spy is my first big movie doing any big stunts like that. For example when we did the plan scene. Some people think the plane might have been edited and CGI to be moving. But the rig that we were sitting in, on the plane, would actually shake during the scene. Which gave me so much energy, it felt so real to me. That was definitely my favorite thing.

You need to get in a space where you feel you're really on that plane and it's about to fall off that cliff. That's what I learned.

Thoughts on being in a "Spy" Movie

Chloe Coleman: I grew up loving spy movies, so I was so excited to be in this movie about spies. But My Spy is also about relationships that two people have. Sophie and JJ are such opposites, which makes there chemistry so good together. Plus all the stunts scenes and everything that is in this movie.

Filming "My Spy" Action scene

Chloe Coleman: Some action scenes were CGI but it was so cool to make. For one scene there was a real plane on a giant track. They dug out this massive hole in the ground and they put a blue screen there, to make it look like a cliff. And then when they edited it, they cut out the plane. The way that it turned out was just so cool because of how real it looks.

Working with Dave Bautista

Chloe Coleman: It was such an amazing cast. Dave is so easy to connect with. When we had our chemistry read, is when we really clicked. I will always remember that.

When we filmed it was so real. I was really able to be in the moment and feel what I had to feel. So the emotional scenes felt very real to me. I really liked that.

He's such a sweet person. He's a life long friend to me. We relate to each other so much. He's somebody that I can rely on.

Working on set, he really is an amazing actor. He's so real. And he really commits to the scene. And I love that about him. Because then I'm able to act off his energy.

"My Spy" Message for Families

Chloe Coleman: The main message that I want people to know if that, this is a film about two opposite people that help each other. Sophie see JJ as a father figure and he is that to her. The relationship that they have together is true love. JJ is a mentor to Sophie and she's a bit of a mentee, so it's a real partner relationship.

My Spy is a family movie. I want people to watch My Spy and enjoy. They can just relax back from everything that's happening and feel good and happy.

Having a Swear Jar on Set

Chloe Coleman: Our director, Pete Segal, did a lot of swearing and I had a swear jar around the set. I would sneak up on him and catch him swearing. Then I said, "swear jar, you have to pay".

After, I donated the swear jar money ($500) to the Amazon rain forest, because they were on fire.

Using her celebrity status to spread social issues awareness

Chloe Coleman: The experience that we've all been going through right now, has really been a learning experience for me and my generation. I really believe that our generation is here to make change, because we know and understand what's going on. And we're here to help others understand.

I want to use my voice to help others and make people understand that Black Lives Matter.

I believe that Black Lives Matter because I'm half black. My dad is Black and my mom is White and it's always been important for me. It's something that everyone should respect and know. And I want to be able to use my voice to make sure that people know.

My Spy follows JJ a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista) who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family. When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment, she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set.

In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.

The hilarious actioner stars Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, Parisa Fitz-Henley and Ken Jeong.

Directed by Peter Segal from a script penned by Jon and Erich Hoeber.
Producers are Chris Bender, Peter Segal, Jake Weiner, Robert Simonds, Gigi Pritzker, Dave Bautista and Jonathan Meisner.
