Note: I was invited as media to the movie screening. However any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.
I had the chance to review THE STAR when it opened in theaters and thought it was a touching tale of how the donkey BO, with the help of some animal friends, had a part in one of the most amazing moments in history - the birth of Jesus Christ.
For some people, a film story like this might seem a bit farfetched. But I think THE STAR retelling of the events surrounding Jesus Christ's immaculate conception to birth in a manger, puts an interesting spin on it.
Parents will appreciate the kid friendly and simple storytelling of what can be a deep tale.
THE STAR Vignette - The Amazing Cast
Kids will enjoy meeting both the animals and human characters. I really liked how THE STAR brought Mary and Joseph to life. They are shown as a regular couple who has to adjust to having something extraordinary happening to them. Which just happens to include having BO the donkey become part of their life.
THE STAR Vignette - Meet Mary & Joseph
BO and his animal friends Dave (the pigeon) and Ruth (the sheep) bring humor and their own adventure along the main story-line. There's other animals that also become part of the story telling, including the wise men's camels. I swear the camels need their own movie. Their so fun to watch!
While the THE STAR does take some creative liberties with the original story, overall it's stays true to the message of hope that the messiahs birth brings.
Along with screening the film, I also received a THE STAR gift bag that included Look & Find and the Sound books supplied by Pikids Books and novelization and picture books supplied by Simon & Schuster. The books were a great way to re-experience the film and the story at home.
Along with books, Sony Pictures Consumer Products, also released other products including an assortment of plush, stockings, ornaments, décor, melamine sets, figures, nativity sets, wooden blocks and slippers all inspired by the film, which can be found exclusively at Walmart and Walmart.com.
The heartwarming animated comedy follows a small but brave donkey named Bo (voiced by Steven Yeun, “The Walking Dead”), who yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams.
On his journey, he teams up with Ruth (voiced by Aidy Bryant, “Saturday Night Live”), a lovable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, Friends From College), a dove with lofty aspirations, along with three wisecracking camels voiced by Tracy Morgan (“30 Rock”), Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. Bo and his new friends follow the star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told.
Rounding out the all-star voice cast including Gina Rodriguez (“Jane The Virgin”) as Mary, Zachary Levi (“Chuck”) as Joseph, Grammy® Award-Winner Kelly Clarkson as Leah the horse, Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) as Zach the goat, Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible) as Thaddeus the dog, Gabriel Iglesias (Coco, Ferdinand) as Rufus the dog, Patricia Heaton (“The Middle”) as Edith the cow, Emmy® and Tony® Award-Winner Kristin Chenoweth as Abby the mouse, and Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World) as King Herod.
