Liberty: A Monumental New Musical, which follows the story of the Statue of Liberty as a young immigrant coming to the US will open at 42West (514 West 42nd Street), with performances beginning on June 6th with its official opening set for July 4th, 2016.

To learn more about the Liberty the Musical, I attended a media preview to meet the cast and watch them perform a few songs from the show.

Based on true events, Liberty is an entertaining 80-minute theatrical experience starring Abigail Shapiro (How The Grinch Stole Christmas) as Liberty, telling the story of a young French immigrant who arrives in New York Harbor in 1884.

"I'm so excited to take on the role of the iconic Lady Liberty once again," said star of Liberty The Musical, Abigail Shapiro, 15. "She's an incredibly powerful character, one whose strengths I greatly admire, and I look forward to sharing her story with an even larger audience."

Coming to the United States in the middle of a national immigration debate and a terrible recession, political forces are aligning to deport her. With a strong resolve and a mighty spirit, she battles to gain acceptance and eventually becomes a lasting symbol of the young country.

Liberty: A Monumental New Musical, is adapted from original material by Dana Leslie Goldstein, Jon Goldstein and Robert Bruce McIntosh, features a book and lyrics by Dana Leslie Goldstein with music by Jon Goldstein.   • Begins performances on June 6; opening on July 4, 2016 at 3pm
  • June 6 - July 3: Monday and Friday at 12pm & 3pm
  • After July 4: Monday; Tuesday; Thursday & Friday at 12pm at 3pm
