Rainy Labor Day? See a Family Friendly Movie!

This morning I woke up with plans to visit the Queens Zoo. We haven't been since my son was an infant and it's a really nice zoo. But those plans were nixed when I saw rain coming down from dark clouds. A quick check of the weather forecast said the rain will slow up but will return heavier later in the day.

So I thought what would be a good rainy day activity? Going to the movies of course!

Disney Pixar’s Brave

Set in the Highlands of Scotland, Disney Pixar’s Brave follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources—including her mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery.

What I liked about this movie

Brave had a touching and smart story. While the movie focuses on Merida trying to undo the curse she mistakenly had placed on her mother, the other parts of the movie are just as entertaining. The Lords of the land, their sons and Merida's 3 little brothers provide comic relief and lighten the dark sad moments of the movie. The graphics and imagery of the movie are amazing. Merida herself is a exciting change to the image of a Disney princess with her wild red hair and adventurous personality.

Oogieloves BIG Balloon Adventure movie

The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure

It’s Schluufy’s birthday and the Oogieloves (Goobie, Zoozie, and Toofie) along with their friends J. Edgar, Windy Window and Ruffy, are organizing a party. Everything is going along just perfectly until J.Edgar trips and loses the last five magical balloons in all of Lovelyloveville. The Oogieloves immediately take action and set out to find the magical balloons in time to save their friend’s party.

What I liked about this movie

The storyline is broken up into sections where the audience are encouraged to dance and sing along. For children (and some parents) sitting still for 2 hours can be a lot to ask. The movie feature kids friendly songs and characters.

ParaNorman is set in the town of Blithe Hollow, whose locals profit from mining the town’s history as the site, 300 years ago, of a famous witch hunt. 11-year-old Norman Babcock (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee of Let Me In and The Road) is gifted with the ability to see and speak with the dead. Norman is unexpectedly contacted by his odd uncle Prenderghast (John Goodman), with the revelation that a centuries-old witch’s curse is real and is about to come true, and that only Norman will be able to stop it. Norman bravely summons up all that makes a hero – courage and compassion – as he finds his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

What I liked about this movie

I was invite to a screening for this movie but didn't get a chance to see it. Still who wouldn't like the idea of a child going on an adventure to save the world?

Please Note: I was invited as media and attended the screening for Brave and The Oogieloves but not the ParaNorman screening. No other compensation was received. Any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.
