Green Baby Shares 5 Things to Know About Sunscreen

The summer BBQ and pool season is almost here – kids and adults alike can’t wait to head out to the pool, park or playground. Outdoor activities means making sure adults and kids are lathering up with sunscreen.

Did you know that the FDA recently released new sunscreen guidelines, that will require companies to change the formulations and labels of sunscreens currently on shelves. Now sunscreen labels must designate whether they’re either 40 or 80-minute water resistant and sunscreen products labeled “broad spectrum” must protect against both UVA and UVB rays, which reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.

So it’s time to check the old bottles from last year, make sure they are not expired and if they are, here are some tips on what to look for under the new guidelines.

Five things to look for when choosing a sunscreen and preventing sun damage for you and your kids:
  1. If the sunscreen is labeled broad spectrum, make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Both rays are harmful and can cause skin cancer.
  2. Only choose sunscreen with a SPF value of 15 or higher that's shown to reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.
  3. Use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. If the sunscreen is labeled “waterproof” or “sweatproof” make sure to read how long the product will be effective while swimming or sweating.
  4. Reapply, reapply and reapply. Even if the sunscreen is labeled water resistant, reapply at least every 2 hours. (Water resistant sunscreens should be reapplied more often after swimming or sweating, according to the directions on the label.)
  5. Finally, limit time in the sun between 10 AM and 2 PM when the sun’s rays are the strongest and wear hats, sunglasses and clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun when possible.
Not sure if a sunscreen is safe for you and your family? Look for original organic baby brand, Green Babies’ newest product, a non-nano broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, which was specially formulated to meet the new FDA regulations.

The new product, developed in partnership with leading manufacturer, MZB Accessories, will retail for $16.99 and comes in a travel-friendly three ounce size in two versions: unscented and lightly scented with tangerine essential oil.

The sunscreen is available in many Whole Foods Market stores throughout the nation, select specialty retail stores and on Green Babies’ website
