Director Interview for Ice Dragon: Legend of the Blue Daisies

Presented by Fathom Events, Chelsea Road Productions and Tricord Media, “ICE DRAGON: LEGEND OF THE BLUE DAISIES” will open in U.S. theaters for a two-day-only event on March 24 and March 26.

I was able to screen ICE DRAGON and thought it was an interesting mix of storytelling with some biblical references. So to learn more about ICE DRAGON, I interviewed Bruce Stacey, Canadian director and producer.

Why make a musical animated story?

For starters, I have been a big fan of musicals for as long as I can remember. From MGM’s The Wizard of Oz to Disney classics, I love how songs can add unique emotional depth to characters and story like no other genre.

More importantly, in Ice Dragon – Legend of the Blue Daisies, a central element of the story is the power of an ancient song, that can defeat the evil dragon. For this reason, music was an important aspect in the film.

There are many reasons I love animation. As an art form, it can be beautiful and the creative possibilities are endless. Animation is also evergreen, (lasting for decades without appearing dated). It also travels well and is easier to version for international release then other content genres. Finally, kids love animation, and they are the target audience for Ice Dragon.

Share a bit about matching the songs with the story-line.

Along with being musically engaging, the songs in Ice Dragon serve to reinforce the personality of the characters who are singing and drive the story forward. Of course, the special SONG in our story is more than just a musical device.

The character Nicholai explains that “The SONG is true magic, because it can actually change hearts. It can bring hope to despair, light to darkness and even turn sad to glad!”

The story-line has biblical tie-ins along with an original story-line. How did you find the right mix of bible storytelling against Melody’s story?

Ice Dragon is at heart a parable, not unlike the way Jesus taught about his Father’s kingdom in the Bible. A parable is a story that when examined, holds deeper truth and meaning beneath the surface.

Because the Ice Dragon story was inspired by Bible-based truths and themes, the take home for kids and families comes in discussing the characters and story after seeing the movie.

Classic series like The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis and John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress are all great examples of stories presented in allegorical form. Because Ice Dragon is presented in this way, it allows the message in the film to be received by a much broader audience. It will be viewed in close to 800 theatres across North America this March!

What is/are the message(s) you want families to take away from “Ice Dragon – Legend of the Blue Daisies?”

There is great satisfaction in producing a film that can bring families together, is highly entertaining and can provide them with something fun and meaningful to talk about afterwards.

There is a message of faith, hope and love in the Ice Dragon and these are the themes I’d like viewers of all ages to take home with them after the movie.

That's a great message for ICE DRAGON to leave families with!
