AT&T "It Can Wait" VR shows dangers of teen texting & driving #ItCanWaitVR

The end of summer is an exciting time for teen drivers. Not only are they making plans for back to school but also end of summer holidays like Labor Day. But this time of year can quickly turn from fun to dangerous when teens become distracted while texting and driving.

With more young and inexperienced drivers, motorcycles, and bicyclists on the road, its time to reminder teen drivers to put the phone down while driving.

To help reminder teen drivers “It Can (All) Wait,” AT&T teamed up with the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) to bring AT&T’s nationally touring 3D virtual reality simulator to New York City.

To learn more about the AT&T “It Can (All) Wait,” VR Experince, I also spoke with AT&T New York President Marissa Shorenstein.

Onica {Mommy Factor}: The "It Can Wait" was already launched in 2010, why the need to expand it?

Marissa Shorenstein {AT&T} : We felt the original message needed to be broaden as more people started using more social media. AT&T has worked with various states departments of transportation on research that suggests a correlation between It Can Wait campaign activities and a reduction in crashes.

While I missed checking out AT&T “It Can (All) Wait,” VR Experience when it was in Madison Square Park, I was able to visit a AT&T store to try it out. It was really eye opening how quickly you can get into an accident while sending a "quick" text.

The simulator provides a great, free opportunity for the public to experience firsthand how dangerous it is to take their eyes off the road and glance at a phone even for just two seconds.


AT&T It Can Wait for drivers

The nationwide virtual reality simulator tour focuses on the dangers of smartphone distractions while driving. The unique virtual reality simulator experience is part of the AT&T It Can Wait campaign, which urges drivers to keep their eyes on the road, not on their phones.

The campaign began with a focus on not texting and driving. It has now expanded to the broaderdangers of smartphone use behind the wheel.

When you see the driver next to you looking at their phone, it’s no longer safe to assume they’re texting. New research from AT&T shows nearly 4-in-10 smartphone users tap into social media while driving. Almost 3-in-10 surf the net. And surprisingly, 1-in-10 video chat.

In addition, the It Can Wait 3D virtual reality simulator “pit stop” raises awareness for AAA’s 100 Deadliest Days for Drivers - the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when teen crash fatalities historically climb.
