Giveaway: The Hip Hop Nutcracker Behind The Scenes & Family Pk Tickets CLOSED #HipHopNutcracker
As we get into the holidays, many of us are looking to enjoy traditional holiday entertainment like classic The Nutcracker. Growing up I used to be amazed when The Nutcracker first comes to life. Then delighted during the dance of Sugar Plum Fairy. I admit I use to dance along every year I watched it.
I'm sure many of you have similar memories of enjoying some type of performance of The Nutcracker each year. But this you can enjoy this classic but with a twist. Have you heard about the upcoming performance for The Hip Hop Nutcracker?
The United Palace of Cultural Arts in Washington Heights newest production, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, is an ambitious interpretation of The Nutcracker that reimagines Tchaikovsky’s classic score through explosive hip hop choreography.
A dozen all-star dancers, guest MC Kurtis Blow, a chamber orchestra playing live, a DJ, a violinist, and digital scenery bring the traditional Nutcracker story to life in a contemporary urban setting. This evening-length work, which celebrates love, family and the magic of New Year's Eve, will premiere on December 7 at 6pm at the United Palace, Manhattan’s 4th largest theatre.
To learn more about the show and how they plan to put two iconic elements like hip hop and classic music together, I visited United Palace of Cultural Arts during one of the rehearsals for The Hip Hop Nutcracker.
During my visit, I met with Mike Fitelson, executive director of the United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA), which is producing "The Hip Hop Nutcracker." He is also the co-creator of the show with Jennifer Weber.
The UPCA is a grand and lovely space with ornamental and motivational designs elements all around. Just walking into the UPCA is it's own experience. You can learn a bit about the history of UPCA http://unitedpalace.org/about-us/history-of-upca
The first stop stop for my tour was within the hall of the United Palace of Cultural Arts. I learned a bit about UPCA cultural history and what's make it a unique theater.
After learning about the UPCA, I had the chance to meet some of the dancers including The Hip Hop Nutcracker himself. We also caught a glimpse of the damsel he will later save during the performance.
The team was shooting promo dance skits to share how Hip Hop makes them feel. As soon as I get links to the video I'll be sure to share here so you can them moving in action. It's really fun to watch.
Then it was time for us to watch a full on rehearsal with the other group of dancers. While I knew they'd play classic music while performance, seeing it all come together is still an amazing experience.
In your mind you think the dancers should leap ad glide along with the music but instead their popping, locking and using other hip hop dance moves in combination. Amazing.
If the group was already impressive during rehearsals, I can just imagine being blown away when they're on stage in fully costumed with classic music and lights ready. I'm really looking forward to the live NYC premiere performance on December 7, 2014 at 6pm
Tickets are $10-$100 and there's $10/$25 general admission tickets available the day of the show. You can purchase tickets now : www.web.ovationtix.com/trs/pe.c/9960919
