My Sister Graduates an EMT and not a Negative Black Statistic

This past weekend my youngest sister had her graduation ceremony and received her certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). I can't tell you how proud I am of her.

My Sister Graduates as an EMT

I wanted to be there for her graduation but had to attend a pr media event that morning. While I did miss the ceremony, my mom attended and shared all the details later. As my mom related things step by step, my heart filled with pride.

My Sister Graduates as an EMT

Yes I'm proud that my sister became an EMT

But I'm also proud she didn't become another negative black female statistic. One of the many ones the media and society likes to promote of young black females. Not my sister.

My sister is educated, working, living on her own and is now making moves towards a better life. We need to see more of THESE statistics for our community. Because it's REAL.

  37. Congrats to her for achieving her goals. I used to work with the medics in my county - I was their IT person. If it is like most that I have met, she will of course have to deal with being picked on when she first starts but it will be with a group of people that will have her back and protect her like family!
