Kinky Boots The Musical Review #KinkyBootsBway

My husband and I try to see a Broadway show at least once a year and have seen a number of shows both on and off Broadway.

Our first show this year was Kinky Boots and I have to admit it was quite touching and entertaining. I had never heard of Kinky Boots before I was invited to attend, so I really did not know what to expect.

We arrived at The Al Hirschfeld Theater a few minutes before show time and I was able to snag a Kinky Boots signature cocktail, Lola’s Boots, in a collectible cup before being seated.

The show began with one of the characters, Don, strappingly warning/reminding the audience to “power down” their cell phones. The play immediately began with the “Price and Son” theme and I was instantly engrossed in the performance.

The plot was easy to follow and the underlying theme of tolerance and acceptance were illustrated in a number of ways. The whole cast performed amazingly and presented the story authentically realistic. The two main characters: Charlie played by Stark Sands and Lola played by Billy Porter reminded us that people who may be completely different often find that they are quite similar internally.

The production felt like an overall party and celebration of accepting and celebrating yourself and others. The music and lyrics were by Cyndi Lauper; had us humming along and moving in our seats. I truly enjoyed Kinky Boots the musical and am looking forward to reading the book and seeing the movie.
