Can you hear me? Our Audiologist visit

A few days ago, I took my son to visit the audiologist. Since our last visit to the neurologist ruled out any issue there, the next step was to rule out any hearing issues as the cause to my son's speech delay.

Meeting the audiologist was slightly amusing. In part for me and definitely for my son. She was a bit on the younger side and very playful. She made getting the test a fun type game for my son. The tests went in different parts, one checked my son's ear for fluid or blockage, another tested my son's reaction to sounds. While I'm sure all the test were serious, my son didn't stress or get fussy about going through them.

In the end, the audiologist didn't think my son had a hearing problem. I agree but we had to "officially" rule it out.

As we left, I thought about the audio "process" for children. What children hear and when they hear it can be an interesting thing. While my son can't seem to "hear" me say it's time to clean up his toys, he can clearly hear me say I have chocolate.

  1. It sounds like the technician really made the best of the situation for you by putting both you and your son at ease. Kudos to her for understanding how draining any type of testing can be for both parent and child. :)

  2. That's great news. I found that my son spoke later then my daughter and still today my daughter talks a lot more than him. His speech is still sometimes hard to make out but it's common in boys.

  3. Great to hear. My son went to an audiologist due to his profound speech delay at 3 yrs old. My son is now 8 and I remember hearing him say "I LOVE you on his own for the first time. Brought tears to my eyes. Hang in there. :)
