Visit Philly : Penn Landing Submarine, Ships & Summer Events

After our visit to the Philadelphia Korean War Memorial, we literally crossed the street and walked over to Penn’s Landing. Since the area is filled with ships and boats you can tour, I thought that would be a fun activity for my son.

The Penn's Landing area is named after William Penn, Philadelphia's founder, and supposedly this is the area where he first docked in 1682. Back then it was Philadelphia city's primary riverfront port area filled with ships and docks.

Now this waterfront area is home to ships including the World War II submarine USS Becuna, the Spanish-American War cruiser USS Olympia, the barquentine Gazela, and tugboat Jupiter.

The Independence Seaport Museum is also located here, but we didn't get a chance to visit since it was late afternoon and it was already closed. Instead we sat and enjoyed the tranquil scene of waves before going back to the hotel for the night. I wonder what my son was day dreaming about?

Besides day dreaming on the water front, in the summer time there's tons of activities in the Penn Landing area including:
  • Outdoor enthusiasts, families and kayakers of all levels can rent boats and enjoy the river through the “Paddle Penn’s Landing” program, which features kayaks and foot-pedaled swan boats.
  • Movie fan can enjoy Screenings Under the Stars where every Thursday night in July and August, a different film will be screened outdoors on a big screen at Penn’s Landing.
  • If you likfe learning about different cultures then you'll enjoy the Cultures PECO Multicultural Series. Just head over to Penn’s Landing for its PECO Multicultural Series, a series of weekend outdoor festivals taking place May through September.
  • Wanna enjoy the Summer Concert Series ? The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing is home to free, alfresco concerts on Friday nights, and certain Saturdays, all summer long. From jazz to gospel to R&B, the Summer Concert Series has something for every music lover.
