Hasbro's 2012 Preview: Mr Potato Head 60th Birthday Celebration

During the Hasbro Toy Fair preview this year, there was a birthday party for a very special spud! Mr Potato Head, one of the most cherished iconic characters turned a very young 60 years old. Wow I can't believe it. Like many of you I grew up playing with the famous tater!

During the birthday celebration, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head posed for photos with their fans (Me!) and then blew out the candles on the birthday cake as we all sang "Happy Birthday"!

After the party, I had a chance to see and learn what new and exciting changes happened with the MR. and MRS. POTATO HEAD characters

New product introductions for 2012 include the MASHLY IN LOVE MR. AND MRS. 60TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION set featuring the couple holding hands as they renew their wedding vows.

There's also the BIRTHDAY SPUD assortment complete with all the party accessories needed to celebrate. THE AMAZING SPIDER- MAN SPIDER SPUD and STAR WARS DARTH TATER characters to be released this Spring in line with the film releases of The Amazing Spider-Man and Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace in 3D.

I also learned a bit of potato history. Did you know that the MR. POTATO HEAD character was released in the U.S. market in 1952?! He was the FIRST TOY ever advertised on television! Since then MR. POTATO HEAD has continued to make history. For example:
  • When antismoking campaigns were raising awareness in 1987, MR. POTATO HEAD surrendered his signature pipe and became the official "spokespud" for the American Cancer Society's annual Great American Smokeout campaign.
  • Americans started to pay more attention to their waistlines and MR. POTATO HEAD gave up his "couch potato" status, receiving a Presidential Sports Award from the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 1992.
  • As "tweets" and "likes" became part of our vernacular, MR. POTATO HEAD became one of Hasbro's first brands with a Facebook page and gave fans across the world the chance to communicate with the character through social media.
And who can forget MR. POTATO HEAD 1995 star performance in Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story"?! ...and the sequels?! That's one busy potato!

As I watch my son playing with his own MR. POTATO HEAD, I hope the MR. POTATO HEAD character lasts to celebrate many more birthdays!

  1. I LOVE Mr. Potato Head. And I especially love that they haven't tried to update his look. He is perfect the way he is.
