This week I attend the opening at Sony Wonder Technology Lab in midtown Manhattan, for the unveiling of the Mixer interactive exhibit featuring 14-time Grammy(r) Award-winning recording artist Alicia Keys.
The Music Mixer experience allows visitors to put their own spin on the Alicia Keys hit, "Empire State of Mind (Part II)," using a variety of instrument tracks in genres ranging from Hip-Hop to World. By manipulating a set of three-dimensional "audio blocks" on an interactive table, visitors work together to create a whole new mix, while learning about the characteristics of different instruments, effects and musical styles.
During the opening a class of kids were the first ones to learn how to use the tools on the table to edit and mix audio on an active stream. The controls on the table work by touch while a virtual Alicia Keys explains how to use certain features. It was great to see the kids excited about "learning" music and using technology.
The Sony Wonder Technology Lab is a FREE, four-story, interactive technology and entertainment experience for all ages located in mid-town Manhattan. Through its permanent exhibits and innovative programs, including Sci-Tech workshops, ongoing screenings and associations with local non-profit and educational institutions, SWTL aims to educate and cultivate the next generation of leaders in media, science, technology and the arts.
Sadly I didn't get a chance to put my own spin on Alicia's song since I had to return to work quickly. But this just gives me an excuse to go back so I can spin out some beats. Look for that post a bit later.
